it helps if your family has an unusual surname, which luckily my grandad did - I also kinda knew it was him as there werent that many people with the surname 'Fayrer' in the UK.

This is good -
" SAUNDERS, Albert Edward (22, carpenter), and HOGG, Alexander George (17, plumber) pleaded guilty , of stealing one bicycle, the goods of Augustus Leonard Baldwin ; Saunders stealing one bicycle, the goods of Percy Frederick Padbury . Saunders confessed to a previous conviction.
Sentence (each), Four months' hard labour."
So one of my ancestors had his bike nicked in 1911 by some toerags, each of whom got four months hard labour!!
Aye it weren't like this in my day etc....

buried in Shandowa Pennsylvanian, changed his name to Bayliff upon arrival at Eilis Island, i bet that guy was a legend.
So has anyone searched for any criminals in their family yet?
www.oldbaileyonline.org
I've just found out my great grandfather did two stints of hard labour for fraud and forgery, no wonder my Grandad never mentioned him and said he died in WW1, looks like he was inside for the rest of the time!
Fascinating reading tho!
