  • Do you? Don't you? When do you

I am chafing. It does not effect me until I have done about 60 + miles but once it starts there is nowt I can do to stop it. This seems like a bit of a short distance to start having problems. This is with padded lycra shorts. Any ideas? Are my shorts just shit or am I a freak.

  • get some chamois cream. it feels weird at first, but it will stop the chafing.

  • dam I can't edit the pole to sort out my slack spelling.

  • so far 100% of the people agree with me.

  • ha yea get some cream,

only use it for rides +60, if not i get away with it

  • vasaline would be a cheaper alternative surely? i know i use this when hiking, certainly helps with the chafing

  • Try Bodyglide. Not cheap, but it lasts a long time. Not staining and washes off in the shower but not on the ride.

  • Chamois is weird, but it works. The menthol sensation on the nuts is OK, you just have to relax and go with it ;-)

  • Before a race (tri) i usually give the the 'frank, beans and surrounding area' a good application of either BodyGlide or Brave Soldier Friction Zone, followed by a slather of Savlon.

No problems with friction, but a nightmare if you suddenly need a last-minute-pre-race-crap.

  • My Brooks is tearing me a new one, any tips on making it nicer?

  • You only chafe after 60 miles?! Christ. Lucky bastard. Doesn't take me as long at all. But I'd say you're alot lighter than I am which must be a contributing factor.

  • Cheers for the advice guys. I'll try some creme next time, I thought the cream was only something 50 year old audax riders used on 400 km + rides or something.

I presume any antiseptic type cream is fine like e45 or nappy rash cream or is it some special cream that I have to go to a bike shop and whisper for, get taken round the back to be given "some of the good stuff".

    :-)

Assos do the 'special' cream but it's no better than Sudocrem and costs substantially more.

  • only the best will do. stays slipperier longer than sudocrem and less offensive than lard.

Have you read Sheldon Brown "oil soaking" advice to break them in?

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/leather.html

  • cheers buddy I'll read that at lunch!

  • I've done 200k without an issue and another day might have done 50k and come home cut to ribbons. Depends on the knicks, how they fit, your saddle, weather, temperature, etc. I don't tend to use chamois creme but on longer rides I'm using Assos knicks. They're not necessarily better than others but they are consistently good, whereas some other pairs of knicks I have must sit awkwardly some times and cause issues.
Work on moving around or adjusting things when you notice it until it's better. You'll have an idea of what to change then. Or just be like all the closet roadies on this forum and lube up like a soho popper freak on speed..

  • @ hippy: Knickers are what girls wear. Men wear pants. Just so's you know. You're not in Lisbon now, baby.

  • What saddle do you use?
Where does it chafe (If that's not too personal a question)?

    See http://www.londonfgss.com/thread4814.html

I've just laced my Brooks because the sides were flaring out with my weight on the saddle.

Do you need new shorts? The insides of some start to pill after a while and that can rub you up the wrong way.

Knicks not "nix" and not "knickers". Big difference.

  • Pants not 'briefs' or 'underpants. Who cares.

  • thongs all the way baby :)

  • (insert image of Dale in mankini here)

  • Not read this, but all I can say is when I suffer from it (which is generally all the time, but even more so when I haven't ridden for at least a week) I suffer bad.

In fact I seem to recall a drunken chat with hippy about the subject in the Stonemasons one night.
