Argh! Shimano/campag annoyance!

Posted on
  • I have been building a new road bike. I had a campagnolo mirage groupset thrown in with the frame, and I'm eventually going to go fixed but for the time being I want to stick with gears.

I have a wheelset which unfortunately has a shimano freehub which won't fit the campag cassette I just bought.

Is it possible to somehow frankenstein the campag cassetee onto the shimano freehub, or will I need a new wheelset?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Try a Shimano cassette with the campag stuff. Some combos work fine.

  • use the shimano cassette, just a little bit off, but will work fine

  • Go for Campag

  • I'm sure there are spacers you can buy so you can use a Campag shifter with a Shitmano cassette, but I'm too tired to google it.

  • http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#spacing Check this link out and see what diffrences there are in the cassett spacing between your campag and shimano cassett

  • what wheels you might be able to get a cmpag freehub body for the wheels

  • Or just give me your wheels. I heart Shimano.

  • what wheels you might be able to get a cmpag freehub body for the wheels

Or just a campag spaced cassette for a shimano freehub. American Classic make them, so do ambrosio, and a couple of others i cant remember right now. Someone makes spacers too (marchioso?) that you can use instead of the campag spacers that came with your cassette..

  • Marchisio = £€$

  • You can swap the freehub over to a Campag one, which is possible with some wheels, i.e. Fulcrum.

  • sell the free groupset and get a shimano one! save yrself years of trouble!

  • I have been riding a "shimagnolo" for a while, 9 speed campag with shimano wheelset, works great, but may not be as easy to shift as if it had a campag cassette (doesnt really bother me).
Various combinations work, but it really comes down to the particular gear that you are using.
You can find some good info on the ctc website here http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID= 3946= 3946.
In the event that you dontt have a combination that works well, you can pick up a shiftmate, a pulley system which changes the pull ratio of your derr.
They do a few models allowing you to shift just about anything, with anything, check it out here http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm.

  • Seems far easier to bin all the Shitmano gear and buy some nice Campag stuff TBH.

  • Except there's no such thing as nice camfagnolo Sam, you should know this. :P

  • nice campag stuff......what is this? the bottle opener maybe, but im sure that only opens certain special italian wine.....when it feels like it.

  • Shimano and Campag 10 speed should work reasonably well.
Campag stuff is so much cheaper to upgrade and replace.
fulcrum wheels are made by Campag, so no surprise that you can buy a replacement cassette in Shimano or Campagnolo.
Cheapest option, if you build your own wheels would be to swap out the rear hub and replace with 2008 Campag Mirage which is cheap, light and has cartridge bearings so is going to be really easy to service. I bought a whole new rear wheel pre-built Miragoe onto Open Pro DT DB SS spokes for £75, so it's not so expensive.
