Stolen outside Rio Dalston

  • Last night between 9 and 11 pm my wife's bike was stripped of handlebars, black brooks saddle with a splash of white paint and chorus seat post, front and rear deralliers, rear wheel and cables. Campag chorus levers/shifters and front band-on mech, centaur rear mech medium cage. Rear wheel, cetaur hub/ open-pro rim, continental gatorskin 28mm tyre

My rear wheel was stolen, its very ditinctive with a 27" falco deep silver rim, royce track hub and 27 x 1.25 continental gatorskin tyre. 20 tooth cog. The hub, whilst shiny, was a little crunchy. It had dust caps, unusual, a special order from Royce. The spoke pattern was 3 leading/ 3 following -you'd know what i meant if you saw it

There was a black car parked right next to the bikes with someone hammering at the door for about 90 minutes while the bikes were being stripped, the owner -according to the manager of the shop next door, was called Syed. A white van -owned by the shop manager - was parked up between the cctv camera and the bikes (it wasn't there when we locked up the bikes) A man standing in the shop doorway a few feet from the bikes, denys seeing anything.... I asked the owner of the van to open it, which he did, a little reluctantly, but -obviously there was nothing in there.

Its been reported to the stoke-newington police.

We're usually very careful, its only my second experience of bike theft in 15 years of daily cycling.

Thanks for keeping your eyes open and warning others,

    tommy

  • that's fuckin shit, really sorry to hear it.
that place is really bad, there's obviously people who target there specifically and know what they're doing. I had saddle and seatpost stripped from there along with several other bikes on a monday afternoon, whilst I was i the cinema. I seriously can't believe no-one see's anything as there's always so many people around and a shop right next door.
I simple don't take any bike when i go to the cinema.
I'm local so I'll keep a lookout for any of your bits though...

  • that's really shit; sorry to hear that. Obviously I'll keep and eye out, but its unlikely the parts will turn up, I guess.

Dalston is a real hotspot for bike thieves. And other thieves. BE CAREFUL EVERYONE! Saturday night is particularly bad as they sell the bits down Brick Lane on Sunday.

My boyfriend and I had our bikes stripped 4 times in six weeks once. I never leave it locked up anywhere in Dalston anymore.
Oh, and someone tried to break into our flat last Saturday. They didn't succeed, but the poor buggers downstairs were less fortunate. Make sure you double lock your doors. They got in with a credit card, whilst the occupants were sleeping. Scary

  • fucking dalston.

what a shit hole. burn it down. it's only hipsters and poor people after all.

  • shit.

The one time I locked my Claud outside there I was well nervous, now I know I was right to be so.

  • Sounds like they were there for a while with various tools to do this. And nobody noticed? Right

Dalston. I had more shit living there for 3 years then all my other 33 years of living in London put together! My mate used to live opposite the blockbusters on Sandringham Road. The zombies used to deal crack from his front garden. Used to hide the stuff there too. Everytime he left he had to make a crazy dash from his front door to the high road. What a joke

  • Cunts! Thanks, never left my bike there and now never will.

  • Thanks guys (and gals?)
I've posted news to stolenbikelondon as well. Any ideas where else might be useful?

  • "stripping nice bikes is losersville"

not really. it will get you a couple of hundred pounds in this case. and it's easier and less dangerous than stripping cars. fuck it, if i was poor and society fucked me over and my life was unbearably hard i'd rob your deep vs and your record seatpost before you could say 'crackhead zombies no excuse beyond reproach'.

  • real shame about your bike.

east london is rife with bike crime there are so many posts on here about stolen bikes in hackney and the surrounding areas, i often wonder what the attraction of living there is. (i lived there once but soon left)

  • actually we'd been watching "Happy-go-lucky" and in the first 10 mins the lead (Poppy) has her bike stolen, and whilst saddened, demonstrates an impressive non-attachment (to worldly goods). My custom sonic was stolen a few years back and very happily found again a week later. I meditated on non-attachement at that time and was surprisingly mellow for a week, but my joy at its return made me wonder if it was genuine. It doesn't help the anxiety of having to ride the sonic (and L her gorgeous Eddy) until we can get the others fixed in a more understated manner.

Oh the irony of that is horrible.

It's not even that cheap anymore!

Why does anyone live anywhere? Tends to be a combination of convenience for work, convenience for social life, convenience of friends / family, budget and then "niceness" comes into play given all of those constraints. Everyone puts different weightings to each category but it's nearly always a compromise.

  • i've lived here on and off for 17 years, -long before it was trendy and when fixed gear bikes were something only old boys in wool with carradice saddle-bags rode- there's a very long tradition of people actually choosing to work in shitty places because that's where their skills are most valuable. Its even in my contract that i have to live locally!

  • 'crackhead zombies don't get organised enough to run a stripping operation.'

probably true. or at least, not that kind of stripping operation.

  • fucking dalston.

oi! it may be my own fault i am poor, but i'll have less of your disdain you scallywag! ;)

  • I lived in Dalston when I was sub-breadline, and thanks to my neighbours, the local benefits agency, and assorted strangers, I ended up even more destitute.

Pity. I liked a lot of things about the place. From what I can tell, things have improved quite a lot since the early/mid 90s recession/depression.

  • Thanks again for your support. Now i've got to write a practice protocol for managing drug users at the surgery. Perhaps an amnesty on bike parts before we see them should be part of it.

  • hipsters and poor people

    :D
