  • Durty Druid your sentence structure is perplexing.

  • At the moment I'm drooling over a Surly Pacer.. Might get one this summer. I have serious gear lust!

  • They're pretty nice.

I'd love one of their non-fixed/ss frames for riding longer distances. That new travellers check looks very nice.

  • emilie, which is your surly? the one with the 650 hed 3?

Apologies for that, a couple of pints at lunch tends to do that for me. Spotted it but couldn't be arsed to change it.

  • hate to say it but I use a Langster to commute on and I think it works really well for the money! really comfortable and light!

Prefer riding my IRO but I'm not leaving that outside work in town all day!!

If they nick the Langster so be it, i'll buy another easily!!

Kind of excessive for a beater but the affinity will be way nicer when it's finished. You forgot about the look forks ;]

  • My surly is my beater :]

My Surly is beaten, but you hurt the ones you love the most.

Good simple solid bike, I much prefer it over my Bridgestone or Condor Pista.

  • Anyone got anything other than the Steamroller? If so, any good?

  • suryly is a fantastic sturdy ride and very light. Excellent survivor of accidents, so solid and beautiful in grey. I could not bear it if someone slagged off a surly.

    deal with this :-) :

i think they are a bit overbuilt for the road but fine if you are after a utility bike.
the image/marketing of a small backstreet brand is a bit ott though.
there is a large amount of corporate money behind the brand, surly isn't 4 blokes with jeans, t-shirts and beards in a backstreet lock-up but part of a clever marketing machine, corporate finace and Taiwanese labour. (nothing wrong with that)
i like the colours though but the bikes remind me of volvos slightly overbuilt and a bit chubby round the middle but o.k for riding around a grassy field.

I had a cross check. rode it all the way to Istanbul last summer. was really comfy and very sturdy. some bastard pinched on a night train on the way back, but i'll probably buy another one at some point.

  • Well said Mack.

  • get a paint stripper heat gun and it melts the decals off real eay. white spirits for the sticky and you are away.

  • Surely the heat gun damages the paint too?

  • not when i have done it on two surly frames. i mean, dont hold it for ages or yeah you'll have issues but it was so quick and clean and easy compared to just picking it off or waiting with a hairdryer for ages. and it makes you frame all warm.

  • oh also, the frames were the 29" wheel mountain bike frames, the Karate Monkey. one is built as a touring bike with racks and fenders disc brakes and a dynamo front hub, the other is my all weather fixed bike also with fenders and a front disc brake. great frames i reckon, sturdy, not light but i'd be amazed if it didnt last for ever. rugged. and versatile. i alsways wanted a steamroller, bought a fillmore and regretting it. shame. er only cos its the wrong size though. otherwise its grand.

  • The 29ers are fun but if I buy another Surly it'll be a Pugsley. They're amazing (DAMN YOU SCOTT NOT)
I'll probably try your heat gun method too as I'll need to get the frame re-painted black anyway.

  • a pugsley? in this country? what would you do on it? where do you ride those crazy 3 inch tyres? having said that, they do look fun. maybe that should be my next n +1...

  • They're 4 inch tyres.
A friend just sold his which he used for offroading in Scotland.

To be honest, having ridden one for all of a few hours in central London, my question would be what wouldn't you do on it?

  • I love the idea of a pugsley too. Seen them with a 29er wheel set as well for a "light weight version"

    29er style

  • Check out the gum walls on this one!

  • Singlespeed is definitely the way to go. If I hadn't been not spending money due to needing to move in with him, I'd have bought Scott's. To be honest I tried once when I was drunk but the cash point in the pub couldn't give me enough money ;]

  • 4 inches. blimey thats big. like i said, fun looking though. i'd like to try one and see what its all about but i get scared doing things like that as im trying to scale down the number of bike in my stable, or at least one in one out. not just add more.

  • nothing attract the same criticism as the langster. nothing.

hmm what about that lady journo who wrote that article.. Alice someone?

You are clearly an addict. As with any addiction there are two paths which you can take.

    1. Completely remove the drug / object from your life and never go back. There will be a period of weening off but this must be structured and have a definite end.

    2. Except your addiction and ride it head first into oblivion.

Trying to keep your addiction at a "I can handled it" level will never work, you will just relapse and fall deeper into addiction. This is not fair on you or your friends and family.

You have to choose one of these paths, but choose wisely as there is no going back.

You know what you have to do.
