  • Using this rationale, everyone would buy their furniture from Habitat and their suits from Saville Row, their cycle clothing from Rapha. The fact that they don't means that there is definitely a market for these bikes, and that is all that matters.

Buying something rip off and crap is actually DISCOURAGING the new to an activity, cos they start to think they're shit at it, whereas its probably that their equipment is shit. It really is a bad idea to get the knock off thing, when as someone above said, you can get a langster or fuji for almost as little, which isn't so shite. This is a GREAT example, the 'toy' skateboard. No skater ever did anything on one of these. You HAVE to get a proper one, you actually CAN'T skate on one of these, they''re just not fit for purpose.

I'm really interested to see the outcome of this experiment...I'm sure it's crap, but the "you get what you pay for" mantra chanted by many cyclists rarely holds true either, cycling equipment (along with fashion and clothing) are two of the worst markets for selling overpriced, over-hyped stuff....

My guess is: it'll prove to be reasonably tough in general but that more intricate things like bearings, hubs, bb etc don't last.......how about a book on what fails first??!?!!?

  • I'm not a betting man but if I was I would go with crank set.

  • Hehe just stumbled upon this thread. Wouldn't it be awful if the bike turned out to be OK?

Skully don't agree with you about the skateboard. Yes it's shite but if all you're doing is learning how to tick tack then its fit for purpose. I had a complete PoS banana board when I was 3 but loved it so much. It was only after 10 years of skating complete pieces of shit (e.g. varnished plank of wood my dad bolted my trucks to when the banana board died) that I bought my first pro deck (Santa Cruz Steve Alba FYI). Even then it still had Variflex trucks. It was only after I'd progressed enough - and stuck with skating enough - to justify the expense on a 'professional' model. The 10 years of riding pieces of shit made getting the real deal all the better.

  • Hmm, alternative means of payment?

I've boycotted PayPal after they accused me of money laundering (yep, seriously).

How much did you have in your account !!! ??

I think the most they might accuse me of (with a lonely £30 floating around all year) is money loitering.

  • This is a great idea, cant wait so see what its like

Go to westie drinks hand over cash to a friendly man in a pub and he will sort out all your problems.

This is the silly thing - not much. I'd used it over the years for eBaying, no problems.

Then when I come to sell my Brompton, this guy wants to paypal me £100 and pay £250 cash, because of cash machine limits. Sends the money no problem.

Overnight, he sends another £100 saying that he doesn't have enough cash. PayPal send me an email telling me I'm being investigated for money laundering and I have to verify my bank account, card and personal details before they'll let me use my account.

Wasn't very happy about it. Checked on my bank's online banking what direct debits were set up, and PayPal had 3. Why would they need 3 direct debits on my account?

So basically I was forced to hand over my personal information, then I closed my account.

    Aye, I will do.

  • You should have my payment now. I even remembered to put my forum id in the message.

Perhaps we can start a trend. We all put in a tenner each month, and then draw lots to see who gets the next slave bike.

    Or perhaps not.

  • it's so funny that the gmail account is 'slavebike@gmail.com'

i missed the boat on this, is there enough money in the pot already?

  • more donations are welcome. It's become more of a sponsorship thing with extra money going to LECF.

  • There is enough money i think so far i need to pull out the calculator i guess. Because i manged to get the bike so cheap anything extra is going to the London Courier Emergency Fund .
Email address i made up just for this as i didn't want to post my regular one all over the net.
