I just stumbled across this thing, the Excentriker. It lets you run a normal bottom-bracket shell eccentricly, so you can tension a chain with vertical dropouts. Pretty exciting.
Downside is that its for 24mm axles, which are hollowtech external-bearing stuff rather than good ol' square taper. Would be great for fixing a mountain bike/fat-slicked curb-eating machine though. Also, new dura-ace road stuff is hollowtech afaik, so you could run it with some sexy road cranks.
