Decent plain handlebar tape?

Posted on
  • I need some good bar tape to go on my lovely new Nitto bars.

Like to keep my bike brand-free so I want something that doesn't have the manufacturer's name splashed all over it.

I fitted Outland tape (from Parker) to my gf's bike yesterday and it's OK but a bit thick so bunches up and looks s**t on the corners.

    Any suggestions?

  • Duck.

  • I ducked. What was it?

  • Stella Azzura Eleganza?

  • Stella Azzura Eleganza?

    +1

  • I'm lapping up the white fizik at the mo. the yellow's nice too.

  • Another vote for red Fizik

SJS do a massive range of colours for Fizik tape. The actual tape itself is unbranded, only the strips of securing tape carry the brand. (though I'm sure you can see this from the photos)

  • I always love the old plain cloth handlebar tape like this one: enough gripping to your hands and also to handlebar + you can always wrap / unwrap it with out ruining it ;-)

  • Cloth if you can do with no padding at all or fizik if you must.

  • Cheers I'll check out the Fizik and Stella.

I had Velox cloth tape on the old bars; it looked cool but too much impact through the pot holes for my old hands...

  • If you're in central London then Cyclefit stock the Stella tape. I imagine somewhere like Condor will do the Fizik tape?

  • Cheers Andy. I'm out in the sticks (Sussex) so it'll be a mail order job. It's the having to wait for everything...

  • fizik microtex. right thickness for padding and stretches enough for a good wrap. the perforated look is a classic. only negative is that it didnt come with chome end plugs.

Fizik silver with chrome end plugs!

  • Stella Azzura Eleganza?

    the best. fuckin period.

expensive, but mail order from GB cycles

having said that, the Pro stuff for £6 is actually pretty good for the money

  • regular Stella Azzura for me - ie no stitching down the middle - in white or light grEy

    …from Sigma in kingston

  • Bontrager gel tape is excellent. no adhesive either it's silicone backed so you can take it off really easily if you need to adjust anything.

  • Another vote for Fizik Microtex.

Got it cheap, fiver or something, in Condor.

  • I like the Cinelli cork ribbon stuff. It's easy to work with, comfy to ride on and it wears well...so long as you don't buy white.

  • Cheers guys. Went for the Fizik in the end; it had most votes and Wiggle sell it and take PayPal in which I have some cash to spend :-)

Took my Condor stealth bike out for its first run since my sprained shoulder recovered today - had forgotten how sweeeeet it is. And the new Nitto bars are just where my hands go, which is a big improvement from the old ones being a bit further forward and lower down than my hands...

  • anyone got a source for cotton bar tape. Sjs used to do it but now they don't have all the colours and are not restocking.

  • I stumbled on this when I was looking for frames.

He also has it in white, black and red.

EDIT: "He"?! I didn't even notice who the seller was. Sorry, Roberto.
