bad chainline.
worn chainring.
too tight/too slack.
if it's a 1/8 ring it'll be ok, if it's a 3/32 ring it'll still be ok, but if it's old and worn and you are using new sprocket and chain..then you may have a problem.
if the chainline is ok, and the ring not too worn, then it should quieten down after 100 miles or so
