    Some cans are still made of steel (easily spotted, because they stick to magnets, aluminium does not - learned that from Blue Peter when I was about ten).

    The reason you need to use aluminium rather than steel for a shim is that, over time, steel compresses and aluminium does not.

    Shim + compression = eventual 'ouch' moment.
