  • but the not so intelligent amongst us, will forget, on their own bike!

    Yep.

My best mate ended up trying to drive his motorbike with the disc lock on, because some how the bright orange cord had come off the handlebars to remind him it was locked.

  • 1) How much do transponders costs? And how reliable are they?

    2) what about some kind of electronics to make the frame LIVE after a certain amount of movement?

    3) or old school like Tynan says: da axe in da bush

  • just losen your stem so it swings around as they ride off

  • Two quick ideas:

use a shimano (or other brand that isn't campy) front brake that has quick release lever. Set it up so it works when the lever is tight but not when it is released. Flick it off when you lock the bike and do it up before you ride off. If the thief rides off without noticing then the brake won't work and they'll need to be good at leg braking.

We used to do the opposite..

Wind the brake cable adjuster up so that the front brake is locked on.

So when we are posing in the cafe with our road bikes out front it'd be that little bit harder for some muppet to just wheel them away.

nice but some chancer will walk off with your bars (esp if you are brakeless) ...

  • There is no provision in British law that you must make your bike safe for people who wish to steal it.

If I remove my brake pads - and then that bike is stolen - do you expect a successful prosecution could be brought - on what grounds ?

I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV but people litigate and win in al sorts of scenarios. How about the bloke who sued another bloke for sprinting on the hoods and not the drops?

  • the ultimate anti theft device.... awesome

    Ha, that is excellent.

    :D

You are probably right, people attempt litigation for some mad stuff these days, but I reckon you would be safe with 'personal bike alterations'.

Electrification is deffo the way forward I reckon.

  • FFS will someone hurry up and invent a tracker system for a bike. I know they exist (the ones that SMS you with location co-ordinates) but not small enough to fit in a downtube.

    Not cheap, mind.

  • There was a company a few years back that would track your kids mobile phone signal for you for 15 quid a month. Someone with some electronics knowledge could probably extract the transmitting part of a mobile phone and make it small enough to go inside a frame tube. But it's a lot of trouble to go to, if the cops caught the theives they would probably only get a minor sentence or just a slap on the wrist anyway. Better to find out where they live and pour petrol through their letterbox and light it maybe.

  • aww man !!!! tracking system for the bike is answer to all !!! friggin hell, that is definitely the way to go. it boycotts everything else in this thread by miles. thanks for that. it never occurred to me that you could make them that small now days. anyway, with something like that you could check your bike, say if you went to a restaurant without moving a muscle. awesome!
