the bricks fit in the gap fine, me and le_car filled the gaps up yesterday with bricks that were lying around. think about it, a hockey ball is actually taller than a brick when it's on its side, thus we only have to worry about putting the bricks in where they fit. if the gap is too narrow, the ball won't fit through anyways so no worries.
