Prices on the rise?

Posted on
  • So im watching the news and they are doing a report about how the cost of raw goods (aluminium and steel) have gone up. Meaning that the cost of components etc could well be on the rise... they even used a bike manufacturer as the example...

    thoughts?

  • I've heard vague rumours of a 'credit crunch'

  • This should provide you with all the answers you seek:

  • I am afraid it is very true.

Pre warned a couple of weeks ago Tyres and tubes are going to cost me 20% more in a weeks time.
I would think that most LBS will resist the temptation to hike the prices until their old stock has sold through. Or will they ????

How did you get hold of my physics paper ??

  • I illegally copy-pasted it from your ebay ad
    ;)

Not really. There's a fuck all you can do about it.

Maybe I could release all of the iron that I've been stock piling to keep the price high. Just a thought. I wouldn't want to flood the market and spoil my investment though.

    Pissssstaker Ha hahaha

  • Be grateful that bikes aren't made of copper?
On the plus side, we got 20 quid by recycling our pile-o-busted-rims t'other day - Ye-haw!

  • I blame those tonsils at Bear Stearns, amongst others

Yes - those tonsils at Bear Stearns artificially depressed the exchange rate of the renminbi, making Chinese products cheaper and more competitive and thereby stimulating OECD consumption which led to massive investment in additional Chinese production which led to increasing demand for raw materials which we didn't notice at first because the US economy was in a recession in 2001-02 but which rapidly became apparent when the prices of said materials, starting with oil, rose rapidly from 2003-04 onwards.

Yep, it has everything to do with some i-bankers investing in dodgy mortgage derivatives.

    Yeah! What he said!

It could also be explained by this simply phrase.

    Shit... It happens.

  • put it this way, the cost of the raw materials in a bike frame or other components is a mere fraction of the retail price. the majority of the cost is in manufacturing, shipping and a series of wholesale and retail mark-ups. the rising cost of fuel to ship the parts around the world will have a much bigger impact than fluctuations in steel prices.

also this does give us all an excuse to buy carbon frames and parts....

  • I was just looking at prices today, Wholesale price for dura ace cranks have gone up by around £50, you can buy them cheaper at Retail inc vat from some places than wholesale ex vat.
I know pretty much everyone is bumping prices over the next month by about 20% at least but ouch.

  • Any imported components will be more expensive due to the failure of the pound (unless made in Iceland).

British built parts will be cheaper. Buy British.

British manufactures still have to import the raw steel tubing and aluminum blocks.

  • commodities prices have been falling though as has the baltic dry index. letters of credit though is a big problem for shipping. steel is made in this country but the raw materials aren't mined (a guess).
the biggest factor for bikes is the pound losing 40% of it's value against the yen.

  • there have been massive price rises.... which ive seen first hand working in abike store.

Giro helmets went up £30 today alone! in terms of bikes they have gone up to and the componantry has tended to remain the same or get worse

  • i work in electrical engineering and the price of copper went kerazy in the last few years. like quadrupled in 3 months. then bombed. and now is rising again.

them cable theiving monkeys don't know what to steal no more.
