You can buy big packs of them from most home brew places - they end up about 10p each (unless you want posher ones).

how have you done the grips for the mallets? You can use old inner tubes and stuff the end around and down in inside of the pole. Tape it with a bit of electrical tape and the jobs a good'un

yeah that's what we did, but i'm after something to hold the end in place a bit better than just stuffing it down inside.....
