  • useless on their own, get a second lock.

    Have you used them?

I think they're pretty good as an extra bit of security. I use one on my front wheel and think that it would be pretty difficult to undo it without some weird tools. I wouldn't bother with one on the back as it would be a pain to align the wheel and tighten the chain so I lock back wheel and frame.

They're a lot better than the trans-x type with the five sided allen key. I don't think it's as secure as an extra lock but it's a lot less hassle and weight to carry around the place.

  • to be honest if someone wants ur wheels pitlocks arent going to stop them. Saying that they will cause a delay, unless they have an angle grinder

  • My pal Wig swears by 'em. Leaves his tasty MTB locked up in East London's fashionable East London all the time. I gather the AHead one is quite useful ... I would consider the seat post skewer if you have something very expensive to sit on, too.

Though someone nice at Brixton once gave some excellent advice (for things with allen fixings like stems, seat bolts or even your Phils!): put a big load of grease in there (once it's fixed up how you want it). Then push a ball bearing of similar diameter into the grease. Will stop any opportunists with allen keys doing you over quickly - might make the diffence between it being your shit that gets nicked or someone else's.

Course you'll need a big magnet to get em back out, which thieves apparently carry to mark out bikes for their mates to nick or something.

You pays your money blah blah

How the hell are you going to angle grind off Pitlocks? There isn't anything to angle grind, other than a) the hub b) dropout/fork or c) the spokes. And then what's the point?

  • Grind the fat end off the dropout i.e. the bit where the key goes to undo the axle. Then you can take the wheel, although it would clearly be a lot of hassle for a front wheel.

  • Hmm, would be very difficult to do I reckon. Yeah, not worth the hassle.

    Maybe for arrospok.

  • Likin the ball bearing idea - ingenious until you get a puncture when you haven't a magnet to hand.

    Would work for seatpost tho...

  • eeehhh, you can get purchase on the roundy bit with some bolt croppers, or maybe whack them with a hammer + chisel or something (you would need a lot of force for this one i reckon)

you can just use vice grips, or channel locks if your in a pinch, crush and twist

  • Hmm. I'm not convinced it'd work :P

I've only seen them briefly in the flesh, though. So I could be completely wrong.

  • Nothing is invincible however I use one on the front wheel as I don"t always carry 2 locks.
    You take your chances..

  • I bought some ages ago but for some reason never bothered putting them on until recently. i have now and makes things look neater on my beater bike. Also ordered pitlock for solid axles (directly from germany as i'm pretty sure no one sells them in the UK) for my other bike. much more pricey but to be honest they don't look as good - quite bulky

  • I've been using a front one for a while. Hasn't been nicked but my bike is looking pretty poor at the moment. Kinda hybrid-y, but with silly bars and one gear.

    +1. that's all

  • ah, set inside a cover type thing like the surly's but all round the nut???

  • sounds like a good plan. fun fixing punctures then :)

  • I've seen shielded dropouts before somewhere on the intarweb? Not with a cover though!
EDIT - and not vertical. or cool.

  • ok,ok, so who's building this for you??
sounds like a damn good idea

  • monster brick fork clearances and wanky geometry?? :p

  • ah, the mind boggles!!

  • and then they gonna have a flat cover screwed in to completely shield the pitlock and confuse the thief a bit more..:)

You can get those from Pitlock already... Pricey as I remember...

  • my good man....you misunderstand....the flat cover will screw into the actual dropout and hide the whole pitlock.

It's been a long day... Already... My apologies, sir... ;)

  • with a solid axle, is it possible?
    ...or easy to sort out?

  • yeah. they make them.
they're quite expensive though, and a little tricky to track down.
should be able to find them online though.
