^^ which is precisely what i did for about 4 months with my pitlock-knockoffs.

Is there any way a single M10 Pitlock on one side of a track axle would give sufficient security? That would be cheaper or is that crazy talk?
-
• #29
bigben
lpg they're not very good..
If you mean that pitlocks are not very good I massively disagree with you, all due respect to your opinion, but bollocks. I'm all ears for a better method of securing axles and stuff, but IMHO they get at least 8/10.
Nah, they ain't worth shit. My mates have had bikes nicked with pits on them. They can be squashed with bolt cutter jaws in only a few seconds.
Lock your wheel with a decent D-Lock, they're the best.

that's what i was thinking...

OK, fair point bolt cutters can crimp the pit lock, but its still easier than riding with two locks. Bottom line if you've got good wheels, saddle etc you're mad to leave them outside anyway. Maybe the truly paranoid should use both?
-
• #33
you dont need pitlocks if you have two locks (which you should), you do need a second lock if you have pitlocks... nuff said

Or just stay at home... ;)
Bummer, didn't realise they were so easy to get through... Two locks, it is! -

fair nuff.

I'll keep using the pits, with ocaissional extra lock. How many times have you not taken an extra lock to save weight or space?
-
• #37
Yikes! I was a few hours away (payday!) from ordering the Phil hub conversion gubbins to get a Pitlock on my front wheel as I'd yet to see/hear of them being attacked.
Instead I've just ordered a Krypto New York Faghettaboudit Mini off Cyclexpress for £49.49 to go with my Evo mini.
-
• #38
Yeah, I'd never seen nor heard of pits being attacked either. Not sure if I quite believe it really. Those metal cones on the outside rotate don't they. How do you get purchase on those with a cropper?
-
• #39
They rotate in the sense that they are not fixed to the internal nut, but if crushed enough they will pinch down onto said nut enabling the lock to be undone. I still think they're bloody useful, anything can be cut, I carry a hefty abus D lock and ocaissional cable to loop through the front wheel, reality is that if they have the time they can cut the cable, and if they have the tools they can crush the pit lock or cut the abus. Its like having a yale lock on your front door, buy a mortice as well just to make them go onto another easier target.

ultimately it's about making it too much of an effort for scum to steal or nick bits off your bike so they don't bother. now all we need is someone to invent bicycle mounted flame throwers

This is what we all need to make our lives safe and complete:

I use a mini-U lock for the frame (to) front wheel (to) street object and I have MKS chain tugs on the rear wheel. Not ideal, but it makes it that much more difficult to remove my rear wheel without a 3mm allen key.

Hey, Does anyone know do these things work? are they worth having and what are the pros and cons? heres the link:(if you scroll down a little:

I think they're awesome.
I've been on the verge of buying them for a while, but been a bit low on £££. I think they're cheaper from Hubjub though. If you're riding fixed I wouldn't bother with a rear pitlock because I don't reckon you'll get a high enough torque on the dropouts to secure the wheel properly.
Peter White cycles has lots of pics and info.
i ride with a Pitlock on the front as i would rather carry the special nut (and 15mm spanner)than an extra lock. it's alright and i can switch to QR for the long rides to cut down on carrying tools. just make sure you don't loose the special nut.
