Do you use chaintugs?

  • Just curious. I did a search and it seems a bunch of you do, but I never see people riding with them...

And if yes, on both sides, or just one?

*fuck, typo in the poll, and can't edit it.

  • drive side! :)

  • used one on the old langster both sides, was thinking about a surly for the mercian but its a bit bling. it makes tensioning the chaining a hell of lot easier

  • i don't use them, might get some one day.

  • I was thinking about it, especially after the recent build.

  • one mks on the drive side. wheel stays put.

  • I do on my MTB as the disc brake pulls the wheel out of line if I dont.

  • I run a fat tug on the slave bike and it's great... Just bought a pair of thins for the Mercian, so have one for sale if you're interested...

  • Can I put dibs?

  • come on man, its all about the tugs on both sides. symmetry in motion

  • Tugs on both sides. I bent an MKS one once and running the other side means I always carry a spare. Plus the symmetry is nice.

  • Both sides for me. You don't have to have them on both sides but it just makes it easier.

  • I used to use one on the drive side, but needed to carry a spanner to get the wheel off in case of a puncture - so in the end I took it off.

  • what is a chain tug?

  • and why do you need one? Sorry, new to all this

  • keeps the chaintight, stops the rear wheel pulling forward. (some say)

  • Interesting, i seem to have a little bit of play in mine(backwards) is that normal?

Would one of those cure it?

  • both side for aesthetic purposes and because the bike pulls to the drive side if I only have the drive side on
and use them so they keep my chain tightish for a few weeks at a time

  • does anyone have a spare surly one?
    willing to pay cash money.

  • Was thinking about getting a pair as am fed up with knackering my nuts getting them uber tight to no effect. Never eliminate play while track standing for more than an nour or so's riding.

My chain is on the long side though, and the rear axle is sitting right near the rear of the drop. Will I have space to put them in, or will i need to knock out a link or two from the chain?

  • The tugs need a good grip on the end of the drops, so you may have to pop a link or two out.

Definitely worth it though, you'll not damage the bolts or drops by over-tightening. Just tighten until firm and then tighten the tugs.

  • I'd like one. The Surly one looks handy, given it's got a thumbscrew.

    • bottle openers.
  • I use a surly one. It's a bit bling but works, and the bottle opener = good.

I'd like one. The Surly one looks handy, given it's got a thumbscrew.

the thumbscrew is fscking tight. I have to use a pair of long nose pliers to grip on it and adjust, although once you've got it set right that's it. it might as well be an alley key - which most people carry with them anyway.

  • Ran them cos I (correctly) did not believe the Phil Wood bolt and washer combo only could possibly withstand my bulk.

Then I got the Phil chrome domes and a good screwdriver handled allen key off Hubjub and I haven't needed them. You can crank up the torque something rotten with the chrome domes.
