    When I was a courier in Toronto my sandwiches were tax deductible (as fuel)!

  • Isn't that like a whole day's work?!?! I wonder how many couriers know that.

    just for example; say a self employed courier does 300 miles in the course of a week, not including travelling to and from home and he earns £350 before tax in that week.

    without taking into account any other expenses for this example, he should be able to do this:

    gross earnings: £350
    less tax free allowance: 300 miles @ £0.20 = £60
    taxable income: £290

    now, I'm not sure if that's how it works in actual fact, and my accountant told me you can claim cost (and all repairs) of the bike INSTEAD but not as well as, the 20p per mile, so in many cases it's better to claim your bike and tyres and chains and associated safety equipment.
