**The thread starter should be able to do this by clicking the "Thread Tools" drop down and choosing "Edit Thread". If the option isn't there, let me know.
**Clicked on "Thread Tools" only options I get are

Cool, I'll look into the permissions thing then.

OK, There's no option for it.
Solution: Leave a message on my profile wall thing giving me the link to the thread and what you want it called, and I'll change it.

Thought I'd put this out there because it came up in the pub yesterday...
The social network stuff that's built into this forum... why?
Well it's not for the popularity contest, it's for this: When the site gets bigger (and it is doing so, every day) you won't be able to read everything (if you even do already). What that buddy list thing does is give me the ability to add a small change that will allow you to search for new posts just from those people who appear on your friend list. So instead of having to consume the whole forum, you can choose to be able to follow the mates you make.
So that's the friends stuff... but what about the social groups bit?
Again, think of when the site is big and hard to follow. If all the people who consistently do polo formed a group, you could just check that page for updates. You could also form groups for organising stuff... 3 people working together on a large social ride? Make a social group invite only and work on it there, with your own photo album and history of all your messages there.
I'm not sure social groups are as useful as a friends list, but it's still a helpful thing to have available.
You don't have to use this stuff, but there are some advantages to using it when the forum has grown a bit more or if the time you have available for the forum is very minimal.

There's now a mobile friendly version at:
http://m.londonfgss.com/Don't try and login... that bit doesn't work yet. But for reading the forum on a very low bandwidth device, it suffices.

VB i reckon you should do away with all these categories.
what do you reckon?

I was thinking of adding more.

ok.

I think it just makes it quite tedious. I mean I liked it when it all one page. Having categories makes me miss stuff, unless I want to click into 7 or 8 different sections.

just click on posts and it feels closer to what the old forum used to feel like, albeit shinier and newer

I can't seem to find out at a glance who has added to a thread since my comment. e.g. I don't log on for a couple of days (I know, unlikely) and the thread I last commented on is two pages back, but loads of people have commented, just not for a day or two. Does this make sense? Am I being thick?
-
• #167
Doesn't make a lot of sense to me... what do you think you should be seeing?
-
• #168
Umm you know when a thread used to have a different colour when new comments had been added and you could search all threads you'd added a comment to.
-
• #169
Oh right... set your options so that you subscribe to threads you post to without notification... then your UserCp will always show you the threads in which you have participated that have been updated.
Plus... those little envelopes on the left of the thread title, if they have a dot in the icon then you posted in the thread.

Hey jim I think that feature is now under 'Quick links' > 'Subscribed threads'?
-
• #171
Thanks both - yep, just wasn't looking in the right place. So when you've logged in, it's good to check CP area cos that will tell you all that's new that's relevant to you.

Gradually getting used to the new forum - thanks to VB for putting such a lot of good work into it, and I do agree that the new features will be needed as the forum gets bigger.
After getting over the difference per se, I still think that it is somehow a bit less perspicacious than old one - it's just minor things:
someone already mentioned that in the 'Posts' view, it no longer says how many new posts there are since you last looked.
I'm still using the 'Posts' view as my main page, so yesterday I tried making a bookmark directly to 'Posts' on my Firefox tool bar. The problem was that the URL was a search which is no longer valid today - could we have a stable URL for 'Posts'?
On the old forum, you could be in the middle of a page of posts, and if you forgot the title of the thread, you could look in the URL and the title would be sort of readable in that. I found that quite useful as I usually open lots of tabs for the different threads and then go through them. I'm not sure how you would make this information always visible in the new forum without using some sort of evil frames, but it would be a 'nice to have'.

Either bookmark this:
http://www.londonfgss.com/search.php?do=getdaily
Which will show you everything from the last 24 hours and is what the Posts button does.Or this:
http://www.londonfgss.com/search.php?do=getnew
Which shows you only new things since you last visited... and is under Quick Links > New Posts in the navbar.- On the old forum, you could be in the middle of a page of posts, and if you forgot the title of the thread, you could look in the URL and the title would be sort of readable in that. The thread starter should be able to do this by clicking the "Thread Tools" drop down and choosing "Edit Thread". If the option isn't there, let me know.
Default link behaviour should always be to open in the same window. Bear in mind that not all browsers have tabs, so there's no such thing as "open in tab" in HTML. I can open it in new windows, but then those that do want it in the same window don't get a choice.
Currently you get a choice, you can middle-click to open in a tab, or shift click to open in a new window, or right-click to choose what you want to do.
That's easily included (I think), but might clutter the page even more (is that possible?). How about if I make it a mouseover thing on the thread starter's name... so hovering over will tell you whether it's new? Or... you could use the thread views as an indicator of newness, low views = new thread.
