First fixed foray

  • hey guys first post.

i have recently acquired a lovely new kona paddy wagon.

i want to convert the bars to risers with a brake and I have picked up some of these sweet acor brakes which I spotted on a post on here whilst lurking as a guest.

now all the different handlebar diameters are doing my nut in, forgive me I'm new to this.

anyone running these brakes with riser bars and what diameter bars are you using?

    thanks

  • not sure about those exact levers, but most come in a verity, bing them with you to your LBS and see what fits, or get out the calipers.

  • Cheers chris

This is what it states with the levers:

    Alloy cold forged auxiliary lever
    For Cycle Cross
    With reach adjuster
    Clip ID 23.8 or 31.8mm
    Weight: 102g
    Available in Black or Silver

Now I've seen bars of 22.2, 25.4, 26, and 31.8 diameter so wtf...

I'll pop to the lbs on Saturday, but any help appreciated so I can try and order all the parts and just takem in to lbs for them to fit.

  • small bmx bars 23.8
    huge modern oversize bars 31.8

  • those levers are the Formula of crosstop levers. I have exactly the same only they're branded Promax. I have a feeling I bent the clamp out slightly to squeeze it on my current bars.

Don't mix the clamp size for the bars and the bar diameter where the lever goes on. The clamp area is always fatter and will be the 25.4 26 31.8 measurement; the bar diameter will be the smaller.

22.2 - you shouldn't come across this apart from the stem shaft.
25.4 - standard mtb/bmx CLAMP size. the size for the bar will be 23.8
26 - italian road bar CLAMP size - 23.8 will fit outside the clamp sleeve
26.4 - old cinelli CLAMP size - 23.8 will fit outside the clamp sleeve
31.8 - as dogsball said, modern oversize

  • i have that lever (again branded promax) and 25.4mm riser bars. i have it mounted at the bottom of the rise with a bit of old inner tube as shim. it works well.

those levers are the Formula of crosstop levers.

this is true but i also think it's the most elegant lever of its type, unless you spunk some cash on a paul e-lever.

  • Cheers guys, all very helpful.

  • Can anyone give me advice on how to fit these brakes and cables? I can only figure it out with the cables coming out of the wrong side...

  • The metal bit should anchor in somewhere in the lever. The remainder of the cable needs to go through the brake clamp - I'm assuming you have side pull brakes - and trimmed to fit. You then need to fit a cable end thingy* and crimp it so the cable does not fray.
