Ok for all those with smartphones, pdas with gps I've found amazing cheap software...
gps tuner www.gpstuner.com
does everything I wanted, record tracks, create, upload and follow routes, export tracks and routes to google earth, loads of trip detail, digital compass, real-time map display....and amazingly it's only £12!!!!
Best of all though you don't pay for more maps!!! it automatically downloads free maps as you travel (not too bad on my new 250mb a month data plan for 6 quid from orange) but even better it comes with free map creation software, you can generate maps from google maps (and others), you can even scan in paper maps and calibrate them for use.....!!! UNDGLAUBLICH!
