What do you mean exactly by 'kill' me? If you're saying end my life, in the context of religious discussion/incitement, this seems to suggest a personality devoid of moralistic reasoning and instead influenced by the irrational voices of the world's spiritual leaders. And if, as you say, "get... Um, hate to come full circle back on topic but seeing as Flatlander, MaxFixedfreak and I live not so very far from each other I'd say that South London is re-establishing it's delightful reputation as a dive. No: apologies - make that ALL London.

The guy who tried to jump me a few days ago was just an opportunist, but if there had been 2 guys rather than 1 I wouldn't have got away with it. Few months ago there was a girl in Peckham knocked off her bike by kids on a moped, mugged, she was in a coma for a month. Friend of a friend.

Here's the problem, if people readily give up their bikes when threatened, then by making mugging easier for these people we may fuel a culture of bike mugging.

Of course you also can't ignore the possibility that some fucker might going to knife you.

I suppose we need to judge each situation individually.

The toe area of a pair of SIDI Dominators is unbelievably tough, you can punch through a (plastic) car panel/wing with fair ease and your foot will be entirely untroubled by the trauma, never tried it on shins though.

Before I left London, I was robbed by a group of four knife-wielding lads and I ended up reasoning with them that they could take my iPod and money, but I was keeping my wallet and housekeys, as I wanted my Travelcard and to be able to get into my home. We argued a bit over my mobile (I told them that I would simply blacklist the handset once I got home, so I didn't see any point in them stealing it) before I gave up trying to keep that. It was all surreally businesslike.

However, by contrast, a single lad tried to rob me with a knife a few months later (I still have a small scar on my left cheek after he cut me) and I just kicked him really hard in the nuts and did a runner. On reflection, I was very very lucky to escape that situation alive and I wouldn't recommend trying that course of action.

At the end of the day, it's just stuff - which can be replaced; there's no way back from being face down in a pool of your own blood underneath some dirty railway bridge off Mare Street.

I've yet to feel even slightly threatened in California, not even in Oakland (4th Most dangerous City in the US last year, apparently).
