  • I'm in the process of converting my bike to a SS/fixed and waiting for the guy at Kiwi cycles to give me a call but seems he is really busy. Can anyone recommend anywhere or anyone who could undertake a bit of an over haul job. pref around Hackney way? Thanks

  • karmas

  • DIY! Check http://www.sheldonbrown.com for tech info and ask here for practical help. You'll be surprised how eager people are to help.

DIY is fun and very rewarding.

  • I am thinking about opening up my backyard for a few people to come over and fix bikes.
Full stock of workshop quality tools that you can use along with a few workstands

Let me know if you are interested - Im around Dalston.
Ofcourse ill have to clear it with my housemates first

  • thanks. as much as i would love to do it all myself I think it best to get someone who knows what they are doing on to it firstly, and then perhaps I can learn more and get a bit of confidence in carrying out repairs myself.

  • Good call, but you'd be surprised how quickly you can learn. And it will save you money...

  • philter thanks. as much as i would love to do it all myself I think it best to get someone who knows what they are doing on to it firstly, and then perhaps I can learn more and get a bit of confidence in carrying out repairs myself.

I'm sure SmallBrownBike will help you for a few quid.

  • I would be happy to for a few beers really.
6 years of bike shop experience, 2 and a half as a full time mechanic.

I will be starting at cycle surgery within the next week or so, as far as i am aware they have shop tools, so ill be keeping my own tool chest at home.

All you would have to do is pop the bike along, i can run through with some ideas for it, you can order the parts and then can spend a sunday morning (pre polo) fitting them and getting you started.

    sound good?

  • Wow, that's a great generous offer, which Cycle Surgery you going to?

People on here really are the salt of the earth eh.

Out of interest do you have a truing stand?

  • SBB, welcome to the Scurgery bosom. Which store are you going to?

  • Object (or anyone else), I've got a (cheap) truing stand that is available on long/short term loan/communal use.
Smallbrownbike could perhaps "install" it in his backyard?

  • i can help out, i live in archway though.

  • SBB, would your generosity run to helping me installing a BB and crankset (when it arrives), i have neither the tools or the know-how... I am dalstoned too and will happily supply beverages of your choice...

Dude that'd be really useful. I've got a few wheels I need to finish and don't want to do these "in the frame" as it were.

  • Holy moly friendly! I should have come here first and looked into building something myself. Meh. I've still got to put something together for my gf, so maybe I'll take advantage of the experience here and that way I can screw up her bike rather than my own.

  • SBB, maybe if you get the go ahead from your flatmates, you could post a timetable, as it sounds like your idea is gonna be very popular...
i have an external BB that needs replacing on my MTB, maybe i could borrow the tools and get some advice on fitting. Does the offer extend to my non SS FG bike?

  • Well im currently in the stockroom at Holborn helping the backlog before the move to Guildford. Then i will be doing a split week between Camden and Highbury by the looks of it. Just need to confirm my days.

I have a Park pro truing stand, dishing guage, spokemeter already here, which you are welcome to use ;)

Ill get some photos of the kind of thing Sheep and i have here and maybe get a few of you over. Would be a good way to put faces to names.

Give me an email when the b/b arrives and we can get something sorted out.

  • ... depending what the b/b is, i do have a few ring spanners for the externals as well. So thats no problem

Ill talk to the others tonight.

  • thanks smallbrownbike for your generous offer. you certainly could point me in the right direction with all your years of bike knowledge. i'm sure i could stretch to a bit more than just a few beers as it could be more than a five min job. Also, whilst I'm writing this does anyone know where i could possibly get me chrome stem buffed up to look a bit more sparkly?

thanks again - it's great to know people are so friendly and willing to help the novices!

  • try using autosol you can buy it at halfords.

  • SBB, you'll be pleased to know there are no vegan thai buffets in camden or highbury.

    I'll be seeing you.

    Haha!!
man, i have been exploding downwards for a few days now.
It was either the buffet or the curry i made myself the night before. Which ever it was, it didn't take to me too well.
