Opening/slash in New Rims

Posted on
  • I have built a pair of wheels with brand new Mavic CXP22 rims.
Opposite to the valve hole I can see a tiny opening/slash in a straight line through the rim. Possibly is the rim’s joint. It looks like half welded and mostly on the braking wall is slightly open. Both rims are the same.
Is this ok, or it is a manufacturing fault?

  • pictures?

  • I am not having a camera with me at the moment but I’ll try to post some pictures later this afternoon

  • Probably just the weld. The cheaper the rim the less attention to detail for things like that.

  • I had Alex rims before and no such a problem...I thought Mavic are better but :-(

  • Well. Some manufacturers pay more attention to detail like that then others. Deep V's are notoriously bad.

  • mavic open pro's have a 2mm section where they are joined that look like this, usually covered with the sticker ;)

  • it's the joint. But if you're in any doubt, maybe flex them gently (with your hands) before building them up and trueing them. If they're gonna snap, make sure it's before you've ridden them so you can get a replacement more easily.

  • sounds ok. mine are buried in the garage at the moment, so I can't get them out at the moment. I vaguely remember there being something like you're describing on mine, and they were fine when I was using them.

    I wouldn't worry.

  • My Deep-Vs had the exact same thing. I put a tiny little piece of yellow tape over the gap in each (just because looking at it bothered me) and I've been riding the hell out of those rims for the last nine months without ever needing to re-true them.

  • Ihope i did it OK

  • My concern is that it is all around the rim…when I put it in front of a light I can see through some of the rim mostly on the braking surface…??

  • if you tape it would cover the inside, dont want pinch flats from that.

flex it before you build it to see if it snaps.

  • @stefano - yeah that's fine. I dug mine out and they are exactly like that - they've been rolling for ages.

  • Jos Probably just the weld. The cheaper the rim the less attention to detail for things like that.

Yep open sport and by the sound of it cxp22 (and Velocity deep Vs) are like many other rims just roled and pinned, quite often when you recive these rims there will be a gap before they are built up and tenntion put on them. When built the gap will close but a line will still be visable.

Open pros and other better rims are all rolled welded then machined down, alot more work hence more expensive and better quality.

  • The 22s are supposed to be welded aren't they?

  • I always thought cxp-22 were pinned. They're budget rims anyway.

Stefano's should be fine. I've seen worse that still worked.

  • Many thanks guys, it looks that’s going to be ok…to be on the safe side I will put some drops of superglue cover with vinyl tape and then the rim tape…

PS: I was expecting better quality form Mavic, I checked this morning some bikes in my local shop and most cheap (like Alex) rims had better welding than my CXP22s

And the DT Swiss deep rims. Well hard they are.

22 are pinned. 23s are welded i think. confusing!
