the fact that is has vertical drop outs is going to be a problem.... an issue that would put me off

Get a new wheel and chain for it, clean it up and sell it on. Use money to get another frame...

or get a paper clip and swap it until you get a house:)

aye.. the vertical dropouts isn't worth the hassle unless it's a reeeeeeaalllllyyy nice frame.. The money you'd spend on an eccentric hub compared to a normal hub is just about enough for another, more suitably, frame..

I'd say it's best turned (back) into a nice retro-ish road machine rather than trying to go fixed with it... I saw a Giant Peloton going up the stairs at Grenwich foot tunnel the other day, looked like a good bike.

Once my mate Marc found a Kona in a skip, complete apart of the wheels - it even had SPD pedals!!

Found a picture of another bike which is extremely similar to the one I found yesterday.
Like this, mine has a triathlon bar as well SPD (or something like that) pedals.
I spent my lunch break pulling off the (3!) water bottle carriers and applying WD40 to the rusted nuts. I think I'm going to simply restore this one, and find another frame for a single speed project.
Thanks for your comments guys.

Anybody got any suggestions for a 'cheap' but reasonable quality wheel to fill in the missing gap?

i ride a peloton superlite converted to singlespeed. it looks about mid 90's. the dropouts were a small nightmare at first, stuck a tensioner on it and haven't had a problem since. i wouldn't write it off as a singlespeed. it rides great and it's purple. what else do you want?
