    Teen cyclist killed in collision

Fatal accident:The scene outside Wickersley Comprehensive School, where police closed the road

View GalleryA TEENAGER cycling to school this morning was killed when his bike was in collision with a coach on a busy South Yorkshire road.

The 16-year-old Wickersley Comprehensive School pupil was rushed to Rotherham Hospital but pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

He was in collision with the single-decker coach on Bawtry Road, near to his school, at about 8.40am.

Firefighters and paramedics were soon on the scene to help him but the boy died from his injuries.

Staff and pupils at the school were today said to be in shock as news of the fatality filtered through.

The school said it was too early to comment on the tragedy this morning.
Police have yet to release details of the victim and say all his relatives have not yet been informed.

Officers are now investigating and sealed off Bawtry Road, near its junction with Flash Lane, during rush hour and throughout the morning, causing widespread traffic disruption.

The dual carriageway is the main route into Rotherham from the M18, which commuters use to get into the town from Doncaster, the A1 and the M1.

Large queues built up along Bawtry Road all the way back to the M18 roundabout and further along in the direction of Maltby, where motorists were unaware of the tragedy.

Police said the road was likely to remain closed throughout the morning.

Bawtry Road is one of the busiest commuter roads in Rotherham and pupils often use an overhead walkway to get to and from school so they can cross the hectic road.

  • Rotherhithe New Road closed for accident investigation

  • yeah, surely even an ozzie would realise that south yorkshire is different from south london? ;-)

  • Anthony Minghella died, seems like complications after some surgery.

    :(

He was a nice bloke, I met him a while back.

    RIP

  • Any more details on what happened here?

  • Anthony Minghella wasn't riding a bike.

  • AND Arthur C Clarke... Again i don't think it was cycle related...

  • Yes, a cyclist was killed on the junction of Rotherhithe New Road and Ilderton Road earlier this week. I only know because I work up the road. The road was closed all morning while the Police investigated. The cyclist was hit by a skip lorry, which was later towed away. Very unpleasant.

  • more details posted on southwarkcyclists@yahoogroups.com

Day off and heading south-west to Peckham and our meeting with the
Southwark Refugee Committee Forum last Tuesday 18 March at about 12
noon, Rotherhithe New Road was all taped off under the Bermondsey
Bridge. I spoke to a CSO. He told me a woman cyclist had been killed by
a lorry earlier that morning. I followed the Galleywall Road diversion.

Jon Surtees article on page 2 of yesterday's Southwark News. 30 year old
woman cyclist crushed between an Economic Waste Management skip lorry
    and the pavement railings here:
    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=534919&Y=178339&A=Y&Z=1

I spoke to Jon yesterday. No cyclist name yet released.

The cyclist was apparently heading north up Ilderton Road and turning
left onto Rotherhithe New Road just after 9am as the lorry overtook and
    hit her.

The driver has been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving.

Simon Hughes MP is asking the Council to review the junction.

Angry local residents quoted how they regularly see lorries fly (sic)
    round the junction.

On the way home from a Friends of Burgess Park* meeting last night I
stopped at the spot to read the cards etc on the 6 or so wreaths there.

Colleagues notes there show that Nga (no surname quoted) was a nurse in
    the Guy's Nuffield unit.

A card from her mother says how proud she was when Nga made her a granny.

Ilderton Road and the area is notorious for speeding lorries and this
junction is much too fast. Our questions to Southwark Council (Paul
Noblet especially) about why similar new railings are going in on
Southwark Park Road/Grange Road/Long Lane as those on Walworth Road come
    out have never been answered.

It's too early yet to know what really happened last Tuesday morning but
we'll ask Southwark for a full review of this dreadful incident and that
    junction.

And of course all our thoughts go to Nga's family, friends and colleagues.

  • This is awful. My thoughts are with all involved.

Is there any London initiative to put ghost bikes up at places people have been killed?

    I hate those pavement railings.

  • i hate the whole of our urban morphology and the effin highway code.

its all designed for cars etc.

and i hate the car manufacturers who insist its all to do with their customers liberty. yeah right.

my thoughts and prayers to the dead cyclist and her family.

  • Hate hearing stuff like this but it's a reality.
    Ride safe everyone.

  • If you read that story fully there is a possibility that the deceased (in the American article) didn't know his limits, went brakeless down a fuck-off hill and paid a terrible price.
Also sounds like he could have been undertaking on the right.(our left)
    But the details aren't complete.

He could equally have been overtaken by the truck, which then suddenly turned right at the last minute, like they do here... But as you said, the details aren't complete.

  • Something else is queer about that article:
If he hit/was hit by a FedEx truck then it would be pretty easy to find out/narrow down which driver was in the vicinity at that particular time by the deliveries they have recorded. I suspect some of their vehicles would have GPS trackers as well.

  • Sadly I think this is a death by misadventure. Maybe he misjudged his braking abilities or maybe the truck stopped sharply, either way it is a tragic end to a young life.
