Chain Tugs

  • I am a bit naive with regards to these things. I understand that there purpose is to keep your chain under a consistent tension. Should I use them? I just pull the wheel back nice and tight and lock up the wheel nuts but I've noticed whilst track standing/setting off from static there is a fair bit of play. It's a new bike new chain so just wondered really? Do any of you use them? What is the correct amount of tension to have on your chain riding fixed wheel?

    Many thanks for any advice.

  • Are you constantly resetting the position of the wheel in the dropouts, but feel like you're doing the nuts/bolts up tight enough? If yes, you need a chain tug.

I go for 1/2 inch vertical play in my chain.

Yeah, I use a Surly Tuggnut. A chaintug just lets you dial in your tension perfectly. When you get a flat as well, I find it way quicker to get my wheel back in with a tug than without. Just sling it in and it's adjusted perfectly straight away .

Plus the surly one opens your beer.

  • You just use one yeah? Drive side?

  • The wheel nuts are what keeps the chain, not the tugs. The tug helps the nuts do their job.
Your chain will have some play in it, as you mention, because any tighter and you just wear out your drive components. Just ensure it's not too loose!
    One, drive-side, yes.

  • Excellent, thanks!
