What? GEARS!? Yup, 700C 5-speed Rear Wheel Wanted

Posted on
  • I know you guys are gonna jump on me for bringing GEARS into the forum but I've come by a nice old late 80s Peugeot Equipe with a 5-speed rear wheel that I wanna get up to scratch. The back wheel's pretty shot with bent rims and a notable up/down movement when spun. it's a crappy replacement stainless jobby anyway so doesn't seem worth doing work on it.

I'm quite new to DIY and it seems that 5-speeds are hard to come by and custom builds expensive/bad value for money. It's only a junky (though charming) old thing anyway. Anyone got any advice on getting a cheap but decent wheel?

    cheers

  • I'll start off with the usual cry "do it yourself" loads of advice will follow from other members but maybe a new rim and some time as well as TLC will reward you with a nice bike.

  • arrospok, 5 speed cassette, gaffa tape, sorted!

  • Sound like you could use the old hub and buy a new rim and spokes nad rebuild.

IMPORTANT: Remove the five speed freewheel block before you cut the spokes to remove the rim. You will need to remove the block to build the wheel and overhall the hub.

Strip the hub down, if the bearings are pitted replace them, maybe replace the axel if the cones are pitted.

Open sport rim will be less then 20 spokes another 10 - 15 and you will have a good soild wheel that as long as teh hub cleans up well will role pritty good.

  • Thanks so much guys, and so quick too!

mister k, excuse my rookie ignorance, but what's arrospok? Plus the cassette and gaffa? sounds like a magic spell!

  • what?

this guy ain't heard of arrospok?

    where you been fella?

ah ah ah ah - it's the gears.

  • guess i'm a bit behind the times...
