  • what makes it frothy, tomosito?

  • teddy what makes it frothy, tomosito?

that picture ain't one of mine (but I make it look just like that!)
Turkish coffee froths up like that on the hob. If it's too hot then it'll die down as soon as its off the heat. The trick is to have it on a lower heat and to keep stirring the top inch or so of coffee as it is comes to the boil. Then when you pour the froth remains. Add turkish delight and a ciggie, and life tastes great!

  • I never really get great results from stove-top machines; probably because I'm crap.
I like a caffetiere with Sainsbury's Continental blend made strong.

Monmouth St. coffee shop rocks, and yet, and yet, and yet, ACS on Old Gay Boy Street is only 95p for a capp. and is very good too

  • Fakenger35, where's Old Gay Boy Street? I cant find it in Google Maps?

  • Peace Coffee sounds like a cool company. Brooks saddles, sidis, vans sneakers, good coffee. What's not to like?

Can we add decent independent coffee shops to the map section?

  • Haha I was waiting for the hate. Better than the numbnuts who interpreted double shot cappucino as luke warm hot milk two times in a row in Starbucks at Shepherds Bush the other day. I say numbnuts but I was the one paying £2.50 for the experience...

  • Every time I asked for a bottle of water when I was in Manhatten for a week in '99, I got handed a can of coke.

  • What's that independent cafe search site???

    Got it: http://www.delocator.org.uk/

  • im glad to see the turkish coffee love going on :)

  • i get beans/pre-ground coffee from cubana on lower marsh occasionally, it's pretty good cuban arabica.

ihatelaw - scooterworks (also on lower marsh) is within walking distance of waterloo and sells nice (in my opinion) espresso

  • I have a bialetti stove top and don't ever get a satisfying crema. Is it because I'm using ground coffee rather than grinding it myself?

Coming to this one a bit late I know, but I've just had an americano and a double espresso so am tweaking ever so slightly...

As far as I'm aware, you can't get crema using a stovetop. You can get the right temperature but you don't get the same pressure as you would using a proper espresso maker. I think Bialetti make a stovetop with a noggin on the spout, which actually will give crema (it builds up the pressure and then 'fwoosh' it all comes out in a bit of a dramatic explosion - see link YouTube - Bialetti Brikka Espresso
) but it isn't quite the same.

I managed to get a Gaggia Cubika on eBay a few weeks ago for £35 and it's made a real difference - consistent crema, better flavour and the frother works well. It's a bit of a faff, and there's a lot of 'science' involved, but you get much better results than the stovetop.

I did have a look at the Pavoni a few months ago, but that's a terrifying contraption - far too much to go wrong and I have visions of blowing up my kitchen in an explosion of coffee, water and metal shrapnel...

  • Has anyone tried big Maggie's coffee ?

  • coffee pah get a nice cup of rosie lee down ya necks nothing better

  • I like the bit in The Guardian article ^^^ that recommends modifying your machine with an angle grinder.... Coffee at asm's anyone

  • Soya milk doesn't like coffee.

  • Soya milk doesn't like coffee.

If I'm careful (let it cool a little, pour slowly into soya milk, stir constantly) and use a coffee with less acidity, I get away with using sweetened soya milk - and I think it tastes better than white coffee with cow's/goat's milk.

As discussed before, I've found Lavazza Rosso does the job - lower acidity because it's a robusta/arabica blend (which also means higher caffeine content than 100% arabica).

Coffee snobs will probably gasp in horror, but they can take their rotten guts and foul-smelling breath, and fuck off.

  • AMT Latte with cinnamon, lurvly.

  • I had to unblock and clean out a waste water pipe from a large coffee shop a few years back in central London. Packed full of old grouts, I tell you that stuff smells worse that s*it, p*ss,vomit or conjealed fat, kinds puts you off of coffee for a while.

Ha! i did read on vegan/veggie forums of techniques used.
i'm new to the coffee game and i rarely drink it so i might just avoid milk all together* and have it black**

    • *another airplane reference.
