  • Your dad needs a 4x4 for his job; he should pass on this expense to his clients/employer.
No-one's saying that some people don't need 4x4's, but loads of these cars are bought as a style choice by people who don't need them and who seem not to care how selfish it is to drive one. The additional tax levied on high emission cars is a half hearted attempt to stop people driving them.

  • fakenger35 Your dad needs a 4x4 for his job; he should pass on this expense to his clients/employer.

Whilst largely true practically this can be difficult as there is usually a substantial lag at best between being able to do this.

  • My Dad is self employed, I think it right to tax Chelsea Tractors BUT 4x4 are a tool for people who live and work in the countryside, why should they pay extra for a townsfolk fad. Knowing my old man he will disengage the 4x4, remove the gear knob and fit something underneath out of the way of prying eyes to allow him to re-engage the drive when he needs it. This is one of the reasons I won't live in England anymore to many rules made to many self rightious people anyway landrovers ought be exempt.

My old man is seventy years old, he is not running a business, he drives around in a landrover with a fuck off great big dog and a couple of guns helping the local farmers manage their vermin.

  • Sorry buddha that was what I was one of the things I was thinking off but did not get that point across as well.

  • Land Rovers shouldn't be exempt; agricultural vehicles used in that context should be exempt.
And I don't think there is any specific tax on four wheel drive vehicles; it's about CO2 emissions. So your dad needn't build a secret gearbox at least!

  • thats alright I know what you meant Tommy

once they develop a decent enough battery

that will be it for the petrol engine

the biggest hurdle is to develop a battery that you can charge and discharge

continuously that provides both range and power

    oh and that won't explode

last weeks economist has a good article for those who follow such things

Well he is old, perhaps he didn't understand, to him it feels like a tax imposed by them that live in the smoke

I told him that seeing as the bloody thing is about thirty years old he should register it as a 'Classic Car' maybe then he will be exempt

  • Sainsburys in Charlton / Greenwich has three car parking spaces for electric cars.

They are right by the front next to the bike racks.

    They are always full.

I am however amazed at the noise an electric car makes. It sound just like an i.c engine, maybe it is a safety device fitted so as not to scare people.

  • He might be in luck:

Any car built (as opposed to registered) prior to Jan 1 1973 qualifies to be a Historic car in the eyes of DVLA, and as such qualifies for zero rated road tax. Originally the cutoff was meant to be a rolling 25 years, but the current Labour government quashed this, setting the cutoff for Historic status as 01/01/73. You do still need to display a tax disc however, really just to prove that when you applied for the disc you had current insurance and MOT, but you will not have to hand over a single penny

  • hey fakenger35, i see your point on 4x4s being built for the country side and serving a purpose, but this stoped being true the day they started upholstering them with linings that dont wipe clean, if you look at the old land rovers they are minimalist and full of space, the new ones which are built to drive around chelsea are packed full of crappy shit that would get broken within a day on the farm.

  • My Dad's landrover just misses the cut of date (built 1980) although the green stuff growing on the inside of the windows is about as close as it gets to 'upholestery' so it does seem to be a bit unfair I called him to ask about his road tax for this year and he says it is £180 but he has no idea when new rules come in ?
