  • Track riding puts a lot of stress on wheels, especially laterally, which requires strength. A similar hub design was being used for road and mtb wheels at some point (Cane Creek Volos Team Issue) with the fancy hub flange on the drive side to transfer torque better and make up for the dish, but I don't think they're made any more:

Also Cane Creek says that the newest design of their wheels with the carbon wrapped rims can be used for road training http://www.canecreek.com/track-v-33-wheels.html and they use the same hubs as the older design, which I assume you're looking at since these ones are $900.

You can find a bunch of first hand reports about the older track wheels on http://www.bikeforums.net if you search for volos. Here's an example thread http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=327205&highlight=volos

One thing to bear in mind is that the old cane creek wheels are built up to velocity aeroheads, so you're really paying for the hub which does look great and seems to perform well. As an aside, and being totally shameless, I'm about to sell an almost finished wheelset made of DA high flange hubs (single sided rear) laced with 28 spokes to silver non machined aeroheads.
