On a mac (OS X)
shift+command+4 brings up a cross hair with which to drag over the area you wish to capture.
shift+command+4 brings up a cross hair then hit the space bar and click on a window captures that whole window.
The above key presses it saves the image to the desktop adding control to the above keys copies the captured area to the clipboard so you can paste it into something like Photoshop.
