as a bit of a wrench monkey myself i'd have to say that those "kit-in-a-box" deals are a false economy.
as with much in life - buy cheap, buy twice - which can good with some things... but not with bike tools.
wiggle (for example) also have a good range of Park Tools, which (IMHO) are the dogs. They're not cheap, but they will last and stand up to regular use.
