i am with mask.
cars are just awful. let the tyres down is the minimum they deserve.
people gotta do a lot less mileage.
health and safety, noise pollution and climate change are the issues.

In the sense that it is a panacea for drivers?
A 4x4 lexus will always burn more fossil fuels than a normal family car. -

nephs, it sounds like your chatting a lot of emotional bullshit, am i really meant to believe that people let down the tires of a veterinarian? also why does it matter how old the people are that are doing it? i dont find the argument that because these people are young their views shouldnt be accepted. people who drives 4x4s and big cars in general in london for no reason are generally idiot snobs who think that it is their right to go around fucking up the world and peoples lives by putting others at risk due to the size of their car and the size of most roads in london. and the whole idea that you need a big car to protect your kids is utter rubbish because it just leads to escalation and more and more people getting even bigger cars and putting my life at risk, tbh if i think that nearly all 4x4s should be burnt to a crisp not just defalted, although i realise that the owners would probably just go and buy another just to spite those who did it. (sorry for the rant)

4x4s are not that safe for those in them either...

i think the main problem with 4x4s is the way that they are marketed, they are no longer seen as a practical solution to not having enough grip in fields but seen as sources of power and freedom even though the last thing you gain when you step in any car is freedom, trapped inside a metal box full of luke warm stagnant air. and the power they gain from being behind a unnecessarily large engine and from being high enough to compensate for their collective small man syndrome is just a myth as well, because the moment they step out of the car they become just like everyone else and loose all sense of strength that they gain from knowing that they can run off the road any other car or cyclist.

siman
asm To be fair, your neighbour is fairly confused if he thinks a lexus rx hybrid will do much/anything to save the environment. Hybrids are a bit of a con.
Con. How?
From what I have been told (i may of course be wrong), a lot of them are still gas-guzzlers if the electric motor isn't running (under 30 mpg), which is most of the time. I am trawling the depths of my memory here a little. I remember seeing the prius' stats on top gear a few years ago, my citroen C2 has better miles-per-gallon.
Also, in the US it's a total con. Their hybrid car of the year this year. Gets something like 20 MPG.
Obviously they're not all that bad.
"What’s equally eye-opening is that the Tahoe’s 21 mpg city fuel efficiency rating is the same as that of the city EPA rating for the four-cylinder Toyota Camry sedan."
^ They make it sound like a good thing!!

they use a lot of gas to get going from a stop and to start, and to get the electric motor going, they dont save much at city speeds, and of course there is the production.

Honda has made the world's first (normal looking) hydrogen-powered car though - that's genuinely useful. Still a LONG ways away though. Interesting fact about that car (off of top gear again) - if you were to switch it on and plug it into the mains outside your house, it would provide enough power for the whole street! Pretty cool.
...apart from the whole problem of currently needing more energy to make the hydrogen gas than you get from the reaction.

4x4's are more rigid, higher & heavier, if you are unlucky enough to be hit by one. The injuries will tend to be in the upper body due to the increased height of the bonnet from the ground. The leading edge of a 4x4 bonnet is more likely to impact with the head, or vital organs. Which means you have a higher chance of being killed or maimed.
-
• #38
it also means they are more likely to roller over, their greater weight means that they have more velocity on impact... all bad things for the person in it, and the people around it

..I read about one SUV that theyve deflated.it had big flouresend writing saying "veterinary on-call duty" and at 4 in the morning this guy got a call and had to go out to a farm (4wd needed) to give birth to a calf. it died because he didnt get there on time. it might have died anyways but still...
i strongly suspect this calf would have died anyway and the frenchie eating the veal cutlet wouldn't have felt bad at all. most calves die a long time before their life cycle has run its course.
as for the farm, no 4wd, why couldn't the farmer just stick the calf in a cab, slip a tenner in its top pocket?

No matter what you think letting peoples tyres down is never going to get them on side. I agree with the sentiments about 4x4 however this type of thing causes people to go "I am definably driving as much as possible just to annoy those green Indians, it's the principle" bla bla bla. Really this does nothing for any casue to get people out of cars in genral o large cars in particular.

I can only see private motor vehicles, especially high consumption ones, as a drain on society, and as such those that use them should be made to feel like the leeches they are. The problem with my standpoint though is that I'm not sure its possible to make people feel bad/guilty/conscious (by either words or direct action or otherwise) without also making them think that you are a sanctimonious cockend. Oh well.

Recently the ASA looked into consumer complaints about an ad that Lexus was running for the RX400h that was misleading with the tagline "HIGH PERFORMANCE. LOW EMISSIONS. ZERO GUILT". Since the hybrid CUV has CO2 emissions of 192g/km compared to a European average of less than 160g/km the ASA didn't like the ad. Lexus responded that RX400h emissions were lower than any other vehicle in it's class but the ASA didn't think this was good enough and the ad implied that the emissions were low compared to all vehicles, which they aren't.
The ASA ordered Lexus not to imply that the RX caused little or no environmental harm relative to all cars if it wasn't true. Clearly this is a case of Toyota trading on a carefully cultivated green reputation that isn't always deserved. They certainly deserve credit for cars like the Prius, but many of the Lexus hybrids are not that impressive compared to many of the highest volume cars in Europe.

SUV's were pushed by American car manufacturers because they realized high profit margins. They were highly successful just so long as gas prices were low. In Chaicago gas is now over $3.00 and people are switching as rapidly as they can back to cars.
My father who is a game warden needs a landrover to drive off road. Game warden's have a lovely life but they earn fuck all. He is telling me that he has to pay something like £500 in extra tax because his only car is a 4x4. My Dad ain't got money like that to throw about.
