Yes, I used a threadless for a while but the lock rings kept working loose..
You can rethread it by running some silver solder in and then re-tapping it, but unless you have all the tools necessary it would be best given to a frame builder to do.

I'd go to a builder, but the frame really isn't worth it. I'll try the threadless thing - seems like a good idea for a beater.

Is the thread really gone, or just a bit flat? Your local fixit shop might get enough thread back with the big thread-chaser to set the lock-ring in with a bit of locking potion. You would have to get it totally reamed to use a threadless. I've used a Royce unit for several years without it working loose, but it was a bit spendy.

Well, the thread on the drive side is fine, but 3-4mm is completely gone where a loose BB wobbled and shifted for years. Will a threadless not work if thee is still some thread left?

If it's only 3-4mm on the non drive side then I'd try teflon tape on a normal BB (if you have one) first and see if that does the job.

you can get them tapped out to italian thread which is larger, the get italian to english convertor sleeves from ceeway (or use an italian BB). re threading the BB to italian is still a job for a frame builder and may not be cheap though.

if it's an older bianchi frame maybe it's italian thread anyway?
-
• #13
in which case a pair of those convertor sleeves and silver solder or epoxy the stripped side one in place.

It's a 90s road frame - I'm pretty sure it's English. I have a Peugeot of a similar age and that has an english thread.

Don't suppose you know of any frame builders which will do this?
I have an old french frame which needs a new bottom bracket and was thinking about giving this a go -

actually don't worry, i just found a list on Ceeways site.

From what I remember of my threadless it simply slid into the bottom bracket shell and the lock nuts at either end clamped it in place - so it does not matter about the condition of the threads in the bottom bracket at all. Probably if you can make it a really snug fit in the bottom bracket shell and 'locktight'/glue the lock rings then it will work fine.
I picked up an old Bianchi road frame on ebay and about 3-4mm of the BB shell thread on the non-drive side is sheared. Got the BB out but there's no way anything is going back in. Does anyone know if it's possible to re-tap it? There must be a way.... I was planning on this bike being a beater - it was only £55, I don't really want it to cost more.
