Don't go on the A12 at all. If you get through Gants Hill with your wheels still on i'll be amazed.
You are better off heeding this advice

Follow DD route to North Weald then, mainly, A414 to/through these places. The stretch from Maldon to Colchester is on B roads

Maldon
Tiptree

The run from North eald to Chemlsford is a little dull and long but it's mainly flat.
