Big A roads on a bike are fucking grim - fast cars, lots of exhaust and noise and if it's raining they'll be even worse. Smaller roads are much nicer, but there's always some bastards doing about 70 and missing you by about 6 inches.
If it's raining then make sure you've got a good lights with fresh batteries and use them during the day if visibility is bad. Take them whatever the weather in case it takes longer than you think. I'd also advise wool, especially on your feet, as it will keep you warm even if you get soaked. There's nothing worse than being cold, wet, hungry and a long way from home so take lots of food as well.
