Check weather forecast using http://www.metcheck.com which is the most accurate one I have found. May not be too bad as current forecast is for heavy overnight rain with much less dampness during the remainder of Sunday so you may stay reasonably dry apart from surface water. Mudguards may be useful!!
Would recommend either of these but you say that you have not ridden much out of town so the directions and navigation may be tricky.
Option1
Follow DD route as far as Great Dunmow then mainly A120 through these places
Braintree
Marks Tey
Colchester
Option 2
Follow DD route to North Weald then, mainly, A414 to/through these places. The stretch from Maldon to Colchester is on B roads
Chelmsford
Danbury
Maldon
Tiptree
Colchester
Both routes are just under 100K (62miles)
Advice on A roads. Be very careful crossing junctions as you will be highly exposed for 100 - 200 metres at the mouth of the junction and there are many drivers who will not be expecting bikes to be there.
Have fun, ride safely, remember pump, puncture repair kit and spare tubes. Don't forget to eat and stay hydrated on the road. You will deserve a beer at the end, not before.
