Chris King: Gripnut or 2nut?

Posted on
  • Thinking about getting a chris king headset - it's 1" threaded I need, but I'm baffled by the difference between the gripnut and the 2nut. I'm not running headset spacers or cable hangers on my fork steerer, and I'd be replacing a campag chorus headset (which I'm struggling to find the stack height for, but if its the same as the record then its 38.5mm).

On the CK website it says the 2nut has a stack height of 37.4 and the gripnut is 33-38mm. Which would be best? And am I going to end up having to saw 1.1mm off the end of my fork steerer to get it fitting nicely?

Another noob question: I've looked about a bit and it seems like grabbing a buy-it-now off US ebay for $124 might be the way to go - anyone got any better suggestions?

And FINALLY... which colour to go with this frame? Ooh it's exciting.

  • not sure about the colour but the london pride spoke card is cool

  • you can get mix and match colours from ck at least on the no tthreadset

  • Superprecise not sure about the colour but the london pride spoke card is cool

Yep - think it might have had a lot to do with my back wheel going out of true though, what with it being about 3mm thick :/

chris crash you can get mix and match colours from ck at least on the no tthreadset

Thats pretty ace, but would that restrict me to ordering direct from CK?

  • i have seen some shops offer it, and some times it even comes up on the bay... not sure about who where when why or how though as i just wanted blue.

  • i'm actually fitting a grip-nut, today, needed one because i have a stupidly ridiculasley short steerer tube, will let you know how i get on.
right, where's my hammer and block of pallet wood.

  • you're going to put a chris king on a conversion????

there is a german seller on ebay, that had the 1 1/8 for £67

or nice ebay pink 1 1/8, yeth sailor!

I don't know much about CK headsets, but if it was me I'd get the gripnut for flexibility in the future on different frames. If you get the 2nut then (depending on the Chorus stack height) you might need to cut down your steerer or use a spacer. However, it depends how close the current top nut is to the top of the steerer. If there's already a couple of mm of space then you'd be ok without either. Personally I'd use a spacer because it gives more flexibility in the future with other headsets.

Colourwise - silver is the way to go on a classic old frame like that. Out of interest, why are you replacing the headset? I'd leave it Italian and old school on such a nice frame.

  • I've got a silver 1 1/8 2Nut. £48 all in from US. You shouldn't have to cut down the steerer there's plenty of space
