• it's a dodgy junction. plenty of RLJ from bikes and there are always cars and trucks going through after it has gone red.

  • There's some updated info on Movign Target, the guy was hurt, but is posting from hospital!

  • Yeah works for city sprint, seems to have a good prognosis and also is quite jovial about it all thank god... he said 'do you think i could fix it' :D Ha ha... good humour!

  • It'll buff out.

  • Lucky guy. That bike looks awful.

Hope he makes a swift recovery

  • 2 Lorry accidents in one day! It's up on MT now.

Looks like all our chat at least gave him something to smile about whilst being in hospital :-)

If you're reading this Chewy (Dan?), get well soon mate.

  • ok, well i think someone should collect his stem and anythng else that has survived, the top cap looked ok

  • maybe some ball bearings survived

  • Get well soon if you read this. If you're in the Royal London the food will make you get well sooner than you would have believed...

  • Went past this again this morning. Looks like someone has helped themselves to the bars, headset and what was left of the front wheel!

    Related?

  • went past tonight as well. Someone should rescue his Thompson seatpost. Scratched but still usabe I think. I don't know Chewy so wouldn't know who to give it to.

  • BringMeMyFix
velocity boy Looks like it happened whilst locked there. My money is on a flatbed swinging around the corner and flattening the bike against the fence and shredding the bike.

    Sounds most likely.

For the record, as previously alluded to on this thread, the estates round there are home to some particularly nasty people. Avoid using the cycle routes round the back, don't dawdle if you do venture off the main drag, and be aware that some of the local 8-yr-olds are quite happy to gang up on you and leave your face/body as FUBAR as that bike...

At least the NF types round there seem to have sunk back into the shadows. Same goes for Old Street.

@Todd - I wouldn't call it the Angel though. It's strictly Essex Rd aka Packington/Popham territory.
i'm hearing this alot about avoiding the back way from angel to hackney the bike route through De Beauvoir etc... thats my route to and from work, bout 9 in the morn and 6 ish in the eve... any thoughts - do you think i should really stick to the mian roads instead? Pretty hectic and busy and the cycle route is a pleasure in comparison - but really dont want to put me and my bike at risk - is really it worth battling the commuters and traffic and juctions instead? What does anyone think? Appreciate any advice and other areas to watch for too

I live round there. If you ride there at those times (daylight) it should be fine, but as BringMeMyFix said maybe not cruise about but too much

I used to live on de Beuavior rd and used the cycle route up to essex rd both walking and cycling at all times of the night and day and never had any trouble. Personally i think it is worse on the other side of Essex rd between there and highbury and islington/upper st but best to keep your wits about you all the same.

  • wits it is then and happy to see the lighter nights... i guess everywhere can be a problem and you never really know. luck i suppose. eyes in the back and sides and faster legs.

  • i grew up and still live in this area (highbury/islington/essex road/de beauvoir/newington green/canonbury). i think it's probably better than it was and agree that it's pretty safe (well, as safe as anywhere else in london) during the daylight hours and also early evenings (commuter home-time). later on, if you know the roads and you're reasonably streetwise, i.e. keep a look out for what is going on around you, it should be fine most of the time... most all of the incidents i know about happen cos people are being foolish, or arrogant, or both - and incidents can happen anywhere, too. i know of someone getting smashed in the face and his bike stolen in finsbury park, about 8pm, lots of people about; another who got attacked by a bunch of 14 year olds while stopped at a traffic light in the angel about 9.30 at night (after dark) - but who were obviously just doing it for a laugh as they didn't touch the bike. both those incidents were years ago, though.

most recent scary thing that happened to me - other than drivers who try to kill you on a daily basis (we all have our regulars, eh?) - was kids in hackney chucking fireworks at me while i was riding on the hallowe'en ride: there was a group of lfgss riders in front, a few more behind, but decent-ish gaps between us (half a block?). suddenly there was this almighty bang and some smoke in front of me, followed rapidly by several more minor explosions behind me. i got the hell out of there!
