Some people are saying I should seek additional compensation, etc. But honestly the thought of suing somebody kind of makes me sick to my stomach. I'm from the 'States originally and it is disgusting how people sue each other over there. In the end I was basically able to walk way from the whole thing, and all I want is a new bike. At the same time I'm not ready to be reasonable about it, I want a nice bike. I'm pretty sure I deserve it. Plus she was being a really incompetent driver.as a cyclist we all know that you WILL be hit by a car. as you said it was a not so flashy bike. personally i think you should claim what you are entitled for and not be greedy ask go all out.
this is what wrong with society if everyones trying to get something extra out of it.[/quote]
I'm with Dogsballs on this i think. I'm pretty sure that you could get a decent settlement from a court but privately, be reasonable.
Regulate yourself, call it Karma or whatever but do the right thing.Imagine that you were the driver (i'm not condoning her actions at all) would you take it?
Otherwise, good luck. I hope you get something reasonable.

It would be pretty awesome commuting on a jetski, but maybe one of those pedalo boat things that freddie flintoff got into trouble with would be closer to the mark? I think those things are fixed gear, right?

Thanks for the feedback all. I appreciate it. The Jet Ski idea is nice too, thanks for the laugh, I needed it.
So my back is pretty messed up. it sucks... It's been steadily getting more and more painful during the week. Being a skateboarder for 12+ years I know how to take a fall– and though I wasn't initially too beat up –I suppose it is quite a different story when you front-flip over the front of a car. It's really aggravating now.
Definitely going to be seeing a doctor or osteopath or something.
I'm going to call the woman who hit me this evening and get her insurance info and everything. I still am not looking to exploit the situation, but I am a sculptor/installation artist and work with large materials and it is getting hard getting my work done in this condition. Also, about the bike that got wrecked, sure it didn't cost me too much, but I did spend about 2 weeks or so tweaking and modifying it to get it ridable for myself. And contrary to what I might see riding around, those nice tall Peugeot racing frames from the 70s don't come along everyday! I don't want to worry about working on my bike everyday when I come home from the studio anymore, so I'd like a no-hassle ride, but something nice and durable. So far I like these options:
-A Burls Ti-Courier all custom job (through the guys at HubJub)
-A Condor Percorso customized. And if those two prove too much money, and I start to feel better and feel some sympathy for the driver, then I was thinking of the following (non-titanium) options:
-Condor Pista customized.
-Surly Steamroller complete customized. As always, would appreciate some feedback. I'm wondering if the easiest solution to all of this (just going to Condor and getting the invoice to her insurance or whatever) is the best solution.
Thanks again.

been meaning to reply. get your back looked at ASAP. bout 6yrs ago, i got hit from behind playin football. got winded, but played on. days after that i coudnt straighten my back. saw a GP but didnt do anything else. from that point onwards, lower back plays up when lifting heavy weights, playing basketball and long distance runs. it was only 4yrs after that i decided to see a chiro/osteo. get a scan/xray if you can then go see a chiro and/or osteopath and/or other specialist ASAP

If leaning forward might stretch your back to much, or be painful, then you might consider a recumbent with suspension. I personally find them too low, but here are a few:

Or maybe a Pedersen cycle, the world's first suspension bike.

get a longboard...
Please to hear you are ok, I suggest you see a solicitor. Your claim should really be for your loss, it will not pay for you to be better off than you were, it may seem unfair but there you are.
http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/21/insurance-fraud.htm
Hope you get what you want but insurance is very expensive already and if everyone claimed £1000, for a £100 bike that was stolen/broken, guess what would happen to premiums!
