winston Trying hard yes.....pushing hard no....we've watched thousands ride over last year, you can usually tell straight away who's gonna be good....it's all about fluidity and smoothness....I love it as discipline because less strong riders can overcome super-fit athletes just by having better "style".
I didn't do a great time (24 I think) but I totally agree with this. I didn't use any effort, just concentrated on really smooth cycling and even pressure throughout the pedal stroke. If I hadn't bombed out halfway through and had a multi-second pause as my legs turned to jelly I think I would've done fine.
Style wins out... and stamina (my downfall even in crits and at spinning class), but not necessarily pure power.
