I have an Addict backpack, had it about 7 years, used daily more or less. Only just starting to wear but has been heavily used from bike stuff to going to university carrying loads of books e.t.c. I can fit my laptop, mouse, power supply lunch box small tool kit, pump, mini dlock, wather proof jacket , change of shirt, socks, pants into the main section JUST (I know this bag well and have worked out how to packit). Plus it has some nice straps on the outside to strap a jumper or other stuff to.
If I was looking for another backpack of this size again I would check addict out. In genral I think looking up BMX / skating backpacks should give you what you need. Better proportions than a hiking back pack and about the size you want, hard wearing e.t.c.DAKINE make good rucksacks too.
