    Monster Track Main Race CANCELLED

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The organizers of Monster Track 2008 have decided, after careful consideration, to cancel this year’s main race.

This decision did not come easy and was debated at length. Our reasons are many but the overall factor was that the race has become unmanageable due to the large participation and our concern for the participant’s safety.

As many of you know, Monster Track started as a race held for a small, close group of NYC bike messengers. It has now become an overwhelmingly all-inclusive event. This, on its face, may seem like a positive direction for a race but in the context of a solely track bike alleycat it brings many problems. First and foremost, the safety of the racers is compromised. We believe that this is not a tenable position for race organizers.

Although the main race is canceled, please join us for Gold Sprints on Friday evening, Fixed Gear Competition (track stands, skids, footdown, freestyle, sprints, etc.) on Saturday and the Velo City Tour, at Kissena Velodrome on Sunday.

    Schedule of Events:

    Friday March 7, 8PM
    Goldsprints at Third Ward
    195 Morgan Ave. Brooklyn

    Saturday March 8, 1PM
Fixed Gear Comp and injured messenger fundraiser at Rocky’s
South 5th St. at Kent Ave. Brooklyn

    Sunday March 9, 12PM
Velo City Track Competition at Kissena Velodrome
Booth Memorial Ave near Kissena Blvd. Queens

    thoughts?

can allycats get so big that they are not safe/ fun?

  • inevitable.

  • Related to events in Chicago?

  • maybe, thats all i got, i would like to know what was discussed, frankly i think it would have been better to race in the guys honor then to shut it down

  • Whatever.

Imagine if someone got killed. Imagine someone got hurt and sued.

Mike D estimated to a NY Times reporter that over 200 people would take part this year. That is a lot of people.

I think they did the right thing.

Alleycats are cool and everything, but it's not worth risking another death, and more negative publicity.

  • I agree with Bill. Large scale, brakeless only alley cats are a recipe for trouble and people getting hurt. Fine when it's messengers who are used to it and where there aren't many people, but MT was massive last year. I remember reading about people preparing for it on some US forums and there were people who weren't very experienced at riding brakeless who were planning to race. Not good.

200! Bugger me that wpu;d end up more like C.M! I don't know anything about it much to comment but 200 people in one race sounds like a nightmear to a situation anyhow.

  • i dont know if l200 people are goung ot turn up then stager the start and give people numbers and a time, then let the top 10 racesrs do a mini course for frist... or is all this to organized for an ally cat?

And closed roads, and paramedics, and safety equipment, and have gone through training for riding in tight packs,... the list goes on.

I'll not be racing at the monopoly ride... just participating. Just looking forward to the fun, with as little risk as possible because I'm a wuss.
