Freewheel Removal

Posted on
  • Hello,

I put a freewheel on my new back wheel last week, but as it was an 18t I want to swap it for a new 16t.

the trouble is I can't get the bugger off. I have checked Sheldon, but he advises a vice, which I don't own.

I have all the tools, and have hit it with a big bit of wood, but to no avail.

    Any tips?

  • I'm glad you're offering free wheel removals, mine is a bit stuck. What time works best for you?

  • freewheel remover tool + pipe grips.

  • You have one of those freewheel remooval tools with the 4 bits sticking out?
Then shirley it's just leverage thats stopping you. I used a big adjustable spanner with an extra bar over the end.

  • bigger bit of wood?

  • I have the freewheel remover (which is not a van.....)

Maybe leverage is my problem, will try that as I was just using a short spanner.

  • When I did mine I initially had the problem of the freewheel removal tool slipping off all the time.
Until I decided to bolt it on with the track nut and try again.
I doubt anyone else would be as daft as me though...

plus one mate did the same thing, my rope like arms could get the fucker off...swift bit of foot force sorted it right out.

  • remover tool, axle back on top of that with a bit of give, spanner to fit, 6 feet scaffolding pole as an extension should do the trick

  • HTFU

Just make sure you're turning it the correct way, ie. not in the forward direction.

Did you grease it before installing?

  • Cheers for the help.

    HTFU??

I did grease it, am pretty sure I am pushing the right way.

Not sure where I am going to get 6 ft of scaffolding pole though..

At least edit the thread title...

  • Tut, yes sir.

  • velocity boy Tut, yes sir.

Well done. See me after class for a gold star.

  • yep, stick the track nut over the tool and its all about leverage. if you used grease it really shouldn't be that hard to get off. nowhere near as tight as a fixed cog.

  • doh, too late.

  • To remove it it goes the same way that it freewheels...
Best bet is to put a track nut over the tool to stop it slipping. Put it in a vice and then use the moment of the wheel.

    Nice recap there..

  • Hippy what is HTFU?

  • Harden The Fuck Up

I've adopted it as my catch phrase.

Use more force, assuming you're going the right way.

  • Sorted this problem last night.

Hippy, your mantra worked with a combination of more leverage.

    Cheers all.
