What Would "be" the Right Size Track Frame for Me?

Posted on
  • I'm 6' 5" with a 34" inside leg and so far I've tended to favour quite an upright position. My ideal non track frame size seems to be about a 64cm. I've gathered that track frames kind of come up big, is that because their bottom brackets are higher? I'm trying to resist buying another frame until I've built up the Bob, especially as these few months are ££ a bit slim, however would a track frame in 61.5cm with a 59cm top tube be a good fit? There is one I can't get out of my mind, I like it a lot even though its £££. Would it likely be a good fit?

  • the only way to tell is to be fitted properly.

  • nah, just get the cheapest one you can find, then spend the extra on arrospok/drip victims and white tyres

  • Sorry, my jeans fit and I'm too old to be a Hipster. In the absence of a fitting, anyone else got any thoughts?

  • well, seeing as track bikes have a higher BB, that in turn usually decreases your standover for a given size.

so, I'd say for a genuine track bike, if you ride a 64cm road bike, go for 62cm (or thereabouts) trackie

  • 34" inside leg, is that a bit short for your height?
i'm 6ft1 and ride a 56(semi compact) as i need the standover but have a 120mm stem and layback post so maybe a 59 will be o.k. with a long stem?

  • you can sort the riding position with stem height etc, i'd go for it. if it doesn't fit then you can sell it on without too much of a loss (if any), if it's a second hand frame.

  • and I'm 6ft with a 34" inside leg, I need at least a 58cm road bike..but have short stems cos I have a short torso

at 6-5 with 34" IL, it looks like you have a long torso or big head (no offence!) if you have a long body/arms you can always increase stem length on a smaller bike.

  • you know what they say about people with big heads...

  • you seem about my proportions im 6ft 6 with 36in inseam, i ride a about a 62

  • MrSmith 34" inside leg, is that a bit short for your height?

Cheers guys, and yes, short legs and long body. Now I just have to wrestle with my budget/guilt.

  • asm you know what they say about people with big heads...

    yeah, big hats

  • Big helmets too

  • you do realise that inner leg needs to hug the crotch.

fsck I'm only 5 10 and my inner leg (measured properly) is 34.
And my legs aren't exactly long.

  • chris crash you seem about my proportions im 6ft 6 with 36in inseam, i ride a about a 62

    Fucking christ you're tall!

I'm 6'2 and I ride a 62 Mark V, but that really works out at 58 seat, 59 toptube. It's pretty perfect, might get a shorter stem..

  • eyebrows you do realise that inner leg needs to hug the crotch

Hmmmm might have to get that measured... ;o
I was simply going by my wearing 34" leg jeans.

  • I'd recommend you measure yourself properly in that case ben, unless your 34'' jeans are incredibly sheer... :)

Bang on with you. And I ride between a 56 and 58 in height. FWIW.

  • Ben, I'm 6'2'' and Ialso wear 34'' jeans. I don't ( and neither should you) size you bike from your levis.
I've just sold my 58cm Fuji (which if I was being completely honest, felt a tad to small) to pay for the resurrection of my 24'' (approx) Jackson (which feels it fits like a glove).
ASM is right, get yourself measured

EDIT; It also depends on your choice of crank length.
If you've seen a frame you like, check the BB drop as well

  • I'll get measured.
This is what's been tempting me, I absolutely cannot cannot cannot afford it, but hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

just go visit him in stockwell, he'll be happy to chuck on some wheels etc . although, be prepared to be tempted to buy a lot more ;)

  • Too dangerous. Not going near it unless I think its right, I'm a sucker for a nice pair of lugs...

  • note, he has way more bikes than on website, more like 20 track frames, greater chance of finding something that fits ;)

  • This is a very helpful site for sizing - it's for standard (traditional non-'compact' road bikes) but will give you an idea. The top tube length on any bike is really the most important factor.
