damn surly hubs :( . sounds like the cone and nut, weren't tightened enough to bind together.
-
• #3
that'd be entirely my fault then. fucks.

hoping the right tools can loosen it all up, then depending on the health of the bearings it might not be too much trouble/dollar.

i think its time the T.J Quick went back to its campy geared glory so i don't completely fuck it.

if it's loose bearings and they have been pushed into the hub shell, then it's fucked and new hub is required. but if sealed bearings, then should be fine, but then again over tightening wouldn't do anything unless the bearing itself died.

waaaah! :(

Surly's are sealed. If they're fucked I've got two spares at home though if you need them.

thanks, what's the spacing? this one is the 130mm for the super chain line... but i reckon its time to get a hack that i don't mind ... hacking... :P

Sorry I meant two spare sealed bearings. Just pull the old bearings out and press these in.
5 minute job for a good as new hub. -

.
so this morning i was hearing the usual clicks and ticks on my Quick that seemed to have developed the last week or so. i was under the vague impression that the chain was a little on worn out side, as i had heard a similar noise before i got my last chain upgrade. anyways, 1.5 miles in to the morning 6 mile commute, the noise gets a bit more severe, i can feel the clicks and then i brake hard. not of my will. the chain tension was still crumby, so i popped the chain off to see what was to blame. the bb was fine, which left the back wheel the culprit. yep, locked tight and no tyre/frame rub anywhere. i then noticed the 5mm gap between the right side bearing nut thing and the spacer washer. i had recently replaced the washer that sits against the frame as it cracked and lost 1/4 of itself. the track nuts and stuff where still tight and the spacer nut thing pressed tightly up to the drop out. somehow the nuts outside the bearings had tightened and tightened till the wheel locked suddenly. i hadn't noticed any gradual stiffness, just a bit of noise. so 4 miles left, no buses will take me on cos i had a bike so i had to stump £15 for a taxi to work. :(
