With a few expensive work arounds :]

http://eehouse.org/fixin/ will help with vertical dropouts. How ever you will have to change your chain often and changing gear ratio will be difficult and more expensive.
Not usually worth it. -

As dogs said, vertical dropouts are not a good start for a fixed ride. You will find it very difficult/impossible unless you stumble on a total bargain (and that's what dogsballs is for) to stay near £300 for a lo-pro build given their popularity.

vertical dropouts bad...got it. ;-) so ideally want some horizontal...check, good to know....is there anything I could have on my bike that would simply blow anything my mate could possibly do outta the water? Like some aero wheels...or...machine guns maybe???

Would it not make more sense to just build a bike you love rather than having a petty competition with your friend?

it will be more than your budget though ;)
Hi everyone. First posting ever...please be gentle.
I'm calling out for help to beat my mate in a bike building competition.
Me and him.
300 quid each
Free beer to the man who can build the bestest, sexiest, fastest fixed beast. Any tips? Thinking of going for a low pro frame simply cos i think they look cool. I've had a fair few freewheeled racers but feel the need to own a fixed now....whtevr. Need to know decent brands and where to find good deals, and decal printers, and yeah.
Any tips would be really welcome!
