Ooh... you could say the same about anywhere... I'm not a fan of south London, but this city can be expensive/dodgy anywhere you go. I live east, just outside the edge of Bow and we pay £1100 a month between four (two couples) for a huge, new flat (900sq ft), 4-6 miles from central London, twenty mins on a bike.
If you're renting, get it sorted in advance - August is the beginning of student time, so it gets busy in the rental market...
Congrats on getting married...
