• fruitbat I've just got my 80s Jackson back from Witcomb (it's now probably as much Witcomb as Jackson). He took a while to sort out the badging, don't know where he got them. But may be worth a call.
If the decals say 'Bib Jcakson' and are in Comic Sans, then Dafoney probably 're-imagined' them.

  • It was slightly disturbing, when down in Deptford, to see a nice Witcomb with Dafoney's name on it as well.
Still, I like (and trust) Barrie. And I'll continue to go there until I don't.

  • old bikes should look old, the way you appreciate the lines on your grannies face. You wouldn't want to give her a lift and boob job would you? I'm with dogs.

  • Is this going to be a fixie or a geared bike ben? (Also how's the arm/collarbone/whatever facilitated the need for a sling? This is alex by the way, was on foundation last year, friends with Aidan)

i'm all for giving dales gran a boob job, would help with her porn career

  • I had a Jackson once (I wrote a bit about here if you really want to know) and I totally agree with you that the old logo is much nicer than the new one.

I got mine refurb-ed by Helmut, and BJ sent down new xfers with the new logo. I thought they looked awful. I agree with the rest of the guys. Just touch the thing up, and keep the old transfers.

  • asm Is this going to be a fixie or a geared bike ben? (Also how's the arm/collarbone/whatever facilitated the need for a sling? This is alex by the way, was on foundation last year, friends with Aidan)

Its going to be fixed, and yes, don't worry I know asm=alex. I'm meeting with Hovis and gary tomorrow for a debate on the paint/not paint.
Sling thing is making progress but won't be riding for at least another 8 weeks according to the doc.
    :(

  • what does he know i say jump on that bike right now

    dont do what i say

  • Just been down the pub for the first time since the operation. Hmmm 1.5 pints plus pain killers = squiffy... I'm not going to rush this.

  • bigben With all the mess around I might just keep it as is. The scratches really bug me though. Sorry for the blurry images.

    No! don't blast that away!
Model shop touch-up paint, and just be proud of the history. It's a nice, nice frame.
I can kinda understand the issues Bob and his minions have with the decals. From their point of view it's a risky business that the digital artwork files for decals/badges even exist. They want to keep that 100% in the factory. I'd be the same arsehole about it I reckon.

  • From what i can see in the pics, it looks fine. the bike's not going to stay shiny forever.

  • I contacted Bob Jackson about getting a frame without graphics and they said they'd do it with only the headtube logo. I also asked about getting an unfinished frame (just clearcoated metal) but they weren't at all keen to do that.

They're just protecting their copyright and ensuring people don't put their logos on bikes that aren't theirs. It might be annoying, but I can inderstand it...

  • Well, Hovis has just been over and looked at the frame, he (like everyone else) was of the opinion that it was too nice to paint so I'll try giving it a frou frou going over and then I'll build it up and see. After all if I did decide to powdercoat I could strip it, get it coated and built up all in a few days. Onward and upward said the one armed seagull.

  • Definitely give the Halfords automotive touch-up paint a go. and just buff the rusty bits with a soft attachment on the dremel. should be good to go after that. the pics here don't do the sparkly paint job justice. very pretty.

  • Classic 'lived in' frames look great with clean new parts anyhow. Are you planning to go for black or polished components?
You could always go all-out rat-look like this from issue 3 of le car's magazine

  • I've been gathering rat rod shots over the last few months for a new build... I like the 'not worth nicking' appeal of them...

  • The web site looks like shit, but Llyods is your man for replacement transfers. He'll make new ones if you need them or can copy old ones directly off a frame.
    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/NICK_AT_LLOYDS/decals.htm

Give him a ring, he's really helpful, if a little tricky to get on the phone, oh and he only "does" cheques, so delivery can be a bit slow.

As for that frame, rub the rusty bits down with wire wool and keep going unitl the metal is nice and bright, then rusteez or whatever it's called these days, then spray a bit of primer on, rub back with wet and dry, then paint and wax it like hell.
Scratches in paint mostly rub out with T-cut.

  • Ben,

I've just been looking, again, at the photos. I'm reminded of puppies dying.

Keep the gears on this one

  • fruitbat Ben,

Keep the gears on this one

Well, I've got several geared already, the beater mtb, the crashed evans and the lurvely condor are all geared. I've been gathering the parts for the fixed and am nearly there. Once I can start using my arm I want to it built up, my two candidates were the evans or the bob, I need to talk to the solicitors tomorrow but I guess I can't strip the evans until everything is legally sorted (a year?) which just leaves the bob. I don't feel guilt about converting it, especially as keeping the paint job means keeping the cable guides etc in place. Now if I was grinding them off then yes I'd kind of agree, but its a frame that's been sitting rusting unloved in a shed for a decade or two and I'm gonna love it and stroke its polished bits...

I agree, no puppies or indeed any other small geared-bike-related animals will be harmed in the process of converting it to a fixed wheel. Can always stick gears on it if when the next frame comes along. :)

  • n+1

  • Yup but n+1 needs £$+1, until I'm back at work I've gotta be sensible thus why I've not bought the Benotto that Roberto has. Besides, the previously much mistreated and unloved Bob cost me £21... I feel a moral imperative to show it love and affection, rather like a rescue puppy.

  • I think you know what you want to do with it. Go for it (and be sure to post some pics).
